How does the IceCube neutrino telescope work?
IceCube is built deep in the Antarctic ice sheet, using a cubic kilometer of clear ice as detector medium to catch Cherenkov light from high-energy cosmic neutrinos interacting with the ice. It identifies neutrinos from distant blazars and supernovae over nearly the full sky. Neutrinos are uncharged and barely interact, making them extremely penetrating high-energy messengers.

How does parallax measure the distances to stars?
As Earth orbits the Sun, the observer's position shifts by about 300 million kilometres over half a year, so a nearby star appears to swing by a tiny angle against background stars, called the parallax angle. Distance in parsecs equals one divided by the parallax angle in arcseconds: Proxima Centauri's 0.77-arcsecond parallax puts it at 1.3 parsecs. The Hipparcos satellite measured about 120,000 stars, and Gaia has pushed precision to microarcsecond levels.

Why were Fraunhofer absorption lines a foundational discovery in stellar spectroscopy?
In 1814 Fraunhofer identified hundreds of dark lines in the solar spectrum (later called Fraunhofer lines), and Kirchhoff and Bunsen then proved they correspond to absorption by specific elements in gas. This let astronomers read a star's chemical composition from its spectrum, opening the chemical-analysis era of astrophysics.

Why is the spectrum called the identity card of a celestial body?
Every element has its own unique set of spectral-line positions, and the dark absorption lines in a star's spectrum act like fingerprints identifying which elements sit in its atmosphere. Line strengths reveal temperature and abundances, and line shifts expose radial velocity. By analysing spectra, astronomers learn a star's temperature, composition, density, and even its magnetic field, which is why the spectrum is called its identity card.

Why does a telescope's aperture decide how sharp its view is?
Light diffracts as it passes through a circular aperture, so any point source is smeared into a small haloed disc whose angular radius is roughly 1.22 times the wavelength divided by the aperture diameter. The larger the aperture, the smaller that diffraction disc and the finer the resolution, so sharper views demand bigger mirrors; the aperture also sets the collecting area, with sensitivity growing as the square of the diameter. That is why astronomers keep building ever larger telescopes.

Radio waves pass through interstellar dust clouds, letting astronomers see star-forming regions, cold gas, and molecular clouds that visible light cannot get through. The radio window also brought landmark discoveries: pulsars in 1967, the cosmic microwave background in 1965, and distant quasars. China's 500-metre FAST dish and the ALMA array in Chile both work in this band.

How did the discovery of Hubble's law change humanity's view of cosmic scale?
In 1929 Hubble found that galaxies recede proportionally to their distance, showing the universe is not static but expanding. The relation gave astronomers a systematic yardstick for galactic distances and turned the cosmos from a fixed backdrop into an evolving whole.
Why put the Hubble telescope in space?
The atmosphere is a nuisance for astronomers: turbulent air makes star images blurry and shimmer, while water vapour and ozone absorb most ultraviolet and much infrared light. Above it all, Hubble escapes both problems, imaging far more sharply than any ground telescope and opening the ultraviolet sky the atmosphere blocks entirely. Launched in 1990, it became one of the most productive instruments in astronomical history.

Why do major observatories favour high mountaintops in Chile and Hawaii?
High-altitude sites rise above most of the atmosphere's water vapour, and with the air so dry and thin, starlight is less distorted and absorbed, giving sharper images. Chile's Atacama Desert enjoys over 300 clear nights a year and is among the best stargazing spots on Earth, while Hawaii's Mauna Kea, at about 4,200 metres, is likewise dry and stable.
How do refracting and reflecting telescopes differ?
A refractor uses a convex lens to bend and focus light, the kind of telescope Galileo used; its drawbacks are that different colours focus at slightly different points, causing chromatic aberration, and that large lenses are thick, heavy, and prone to sagging. A reflector instead focuses light with a concave mirror, which shows no chromatic aberration and can be built very large, which is why nearly all modern observatories, including Webb, are reflectors.

What was the central shift of the Copernican Revolution, and how did it affect the scientific method?
Copernicus moved Earth from the center of the universe to just one planet orbiting the Sun, replacing Ptolemy's geocentric model with a heliocentric one. The shift was more than geometric: it elevated observation and mathematical testing over authority and philosophical argument. Kuhn noted that it established the modern, evidence-based and self-correcting scientific paradigm.

Is a bigger telescope always better?
Generally, a larger aperture collects more light and resolves fainter, finer targets, so it has advantages. But atmospheric turbulence, optical errors, and cost also limit real performance. Modern large telescopes pair big apertures with adaptive optics and interferometry to realize their potential.

Who invented the first astronomical telescope?
In 1608 Dutch spectacle makers such as Hans Lippershey built the first refracting telescopes that magnified distant objects, and the next year Galileo turned one skyward with landmark discoveries. The telescope revolutionized humanity's view of the universe. Newton later invented the reflecting telescope.

How did ancient people observe the sky?
Before telescopes, people used the naked eye and simple instruments such as armillary spheres and astrolabes to record star positions, planetary motions, and eclipses. Many civilizations built calendars and navigated by them. These early observations left valuable astronomical records.

Who invented the telescope, and what did it help us see?
The telescope was improved and popularized by Dutch spectacle makers in the early 1600s, and Galileo was among the first to point it at the sky. With it people saw craters on the Moon, moons of Jupiter, and that the Milky Way is made of countless stars.

What did Galileo first discover about Jupiter with his telescope that supported the Copernican view?
After 1609 Galileo saw four star-like points orbiting Jupiter in regular fashion — the Galilean satellites Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto. Their motion showed that not everything circles the Earth, undermining the geocentric model and supporting the heliocentric one.

When did humans first photograph a black hole?
In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration released the first image of the supermassive black hole in galaxy M87, showing a bright accretion ring around a central dark shadow. It was the first time humans “saw” a black hole. In 2022 they released an image of Sagittarius A* at our galaxy's center.

What is a star catalog?
A star catalog is a systematic list or database recording celestial positions, brightness, and other parameters—fundamental reference material for astronomy. From ancient star charts to modern digital surveys like Hipparcos and Gaia, catalogs keep growing and improving in precision. Astronomers use them to compare and discover changes.
