How are gravitational redshift and Doppler shift distinguished in black-hole accretion-disk spectra?

Disk material orbiting near the hole shows strong blueshift on the approaching side and redshift on the receding side, broadening the iron Kα line asymmetrically. Combined with the black hole's gravitational redshift, the relativistic line profile lets one infer the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) and spin, with the two contributions separated in modeling.

How does Hawking radiation cause a black hole to evaporate over time?

In 1974 Hawking showed that quantum fluctuations just outside the horizon let one member of a virtual particle pair fall in while the other escapes, appearing as thermal radiation emitted from beyond the horizon. Because losing energy means losing mass, an extremely long-lived black hole shrinks and heats up very slowly until it finally evaporates.

Can black holes evaporate and disappear?

Hawking radiation says black holes slowly lose energy via quantum effects; smaller ones evaporate faster, but stellar black holes would take vastly longer than the universe's age to vanish.

A black hole does not suck in everything around it — why not?

At a distance, a black hole's gravitational field is exactly the same as that of an ordinary object of equal mass; it exerts no extra pull. Stars and gas orbiting far away move stably under ordinary gravity, and only matter venturing inside the tidal region or the horizon is swallowed. What makes it dangerous is the interior beyond the horizon, not some special suction power of the hole itself.

Why does detecting gravitational waves require interferometers several kilometres long?

Gravitational waves stretch space by only about one part in 10^21 — over a 4-kilometre arm, a change of roughly a thousandth of a proton's diameter. The longer the arms, the larger the length difference a given strain produces and the easier it is to measure. So LIGO suspends its mirrors as vibration-isolated test masses, runs the beams in vacuum tubes, and cancels noise by interfering the two arms.

Why can rotational energy be extracted from a Kerr black hole's ergosphere?

Outside a rotating Kerr black hole lies the ergosphere, where frame-dragging forbids any particle from remaining at rest. In the Penrose process, a particle entering the ergosphere splits; one fragment with negative energy falls in while the other escapes with more energy than the whole, extracting rotational energy and slowing the hole.

How does LIGO detect gravitational waves?

Merging black holes send ripples through spacetime — gravitational waves — which stretch and squeeze space by a tiny amount as they pass Earth. LIGO catches that distortion with two 4-kilometre laser interferometer arms: when a wave passes, the arms' lengths alternate and the interference pattern shifts. In September 2015 LIGO made the first direct detection, GW150914, from the merger of two black holes of about 30 solar masses some 1.3 billion light-years away.

Why does an accretion disk glow, and toward which end of the spectrum is it usually shifted?

Matter spiraling into a compact object releases gravitational potential energy through viscous friction in the disk and is heated to millions of kelvin, emitting mainly X-rays and ultraviolet light. Accretion disks are therefore typically hot and blue/UV rather than visibly dominated.

How do stellar-mass black holes differ from the supermassive ones at galaxy centres?

Stellar-mass black holes form from the collapsed cores of dead massive stars, weigh only a few to tens of solar masses, and are plentiful in the Milky Way. Supermassive black holes, up to hundreds of millions or tens of billions of solar masses, sit at galaxy centres; how they grow is still under study, possibly through mergers or direct collapse of giant gas clouds early on. The physics is the same, but the scales are vastly different.

Why did capturing the first image of Sagittarius A* prove far harder than imaging the black hole at the heart of M87?

Because it is both tiny and twitchy: Sagittarius A* carries only about a thousandth of M87's central black hole's mass yet lies nearly two thousand times closer, so the two subtend similar angles on the sky; but matter circling it completes an orbit in minutes rather than days, and brightness and structure churn throughout hours-long exposures, like photographing a puppy that refuses to sit still. A plasma scattering screen in the Galactic plane smears detail and must be modeled away, dust forces millimetre-wave observing, and only supercomputer processing cross-checked by independent imaging teams settled the final picture.

What is the Event Horizon Telescope and what did it image?

The Event Horizon Telescope is an array of radio dishes worldwide using very-long-baseline interferometry to mimic an Earth-sized telescope; in 2019 it first imaged the shadow of the black hole in galaxy M87.

What happens if you fall into a black hole?

Under a black hole's strong tidal forces you would be stretched into a thin strand (spaghettified), and once past the event horizon there is no return.

What is a black hole?

A black hole is an object with gravity so strong that not even light escapes; its boundary is the event horizon, hiding a singular point of infinite density.

Why are astronomers convinced that a supermassive black hole of about four million solar masses lurks at the center of the Milky Way?

The decisive evidence comes from stellar orbits. Infrared adaptive optics and interferometry have traced dozens of stars racing around an invisible radio source, Sagittarius A*: the star S2 sweeps through pericenter every sixteen years at more than seven thousand kilometres per second on a clean Keplerian ellipse. Kepler's third law pins about four million solar masses inside a region about a hundred astronomical units across, far too dense for any hidden cluster of dark remnants and leaving a supermassive black hole as the only sensible reading. Genzel and Ghez shared the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics for exactly this decades-long campaign.
