How is secondary eclipse used to measure planetary temperature?
A secondary eclipse occurs when the planet passes behind the star and its own thermal emission is blocked. Comparing the brightness with and without the planet's contribution yields the planet's emitted flux, from which day-side equilibrium temperature is derived. Spectrally resolved eclipses map temperature versus wavelength.

How does the transmission spectroscopy method reveal an exoplanet's atmospheric composition?
During a transit, starlight passes through the thin limb of the planet's atmosphere, where atoms and molecules absorb at specific wavelengths and deepen the transit slightly there. Comparing transit depths across wavelengths (the transmission spectrum) reveals species such as sodium, water and carbon dioxide.

What characterizes the atmospheric circulation of hot Jupiters?
Hot Jupiters orbit so close to their stars that dayside temperatures reach thousands of kelvin, driving powerful equatorial jets that transport heat from day to night sides. Their atmospheres often show stratospheric inversions and form metal and mineral clouds near the terminator. Three-dimensional fluid simulations predict wind speeds of several kilometers per second.

What does the Rayleigh scattering tail in atmospheric escape indicate?
In transit spectra of hydrogen escape, the Rayleigh scattering feature—stronger absorption at shorter wavelengths—appears as a deepened blue tail. It reveals hydrodynamic hydrogen loss in the upper atmosphere and constrains its temperature and escape rate. Combined with Lyman-alpha, it distinguishes wind-driven escape from radiation pressure.

Why does a hot Jupiter's atmosphere “escape”?
Hot Jupiters receive intense stellar radiation; their upper atmospheres heat to extreme temperatures so light gases, mainly hydrogen, gain enough energy to escape the planet's gravity. This hydrodynamic escape can alter the planet's mass and composition. It is often detected via blueshifted Lyman-alpha absorption.

Why does detecting water vapor in an exoplanet atmosphere not mean life exists there?
Water is a common molecule that forms naturally by chemical equilibrium in giant planets, brown dwarfs and even stellar atmospheres, with no need for biology. Confirming life requires multiple lines of evidence — co-existing out-of-equilibrium gases like oxygen and methane, seasonal changes, surface conditions — far beyond a single molecule detection.

Which atmospheric signals might indicate life?
Biosignatures are chemical species that life might produce and that can be detected in atmospheric spectra, such as a non-equilibrium coexistence of oxygen, ozone, and methane. Carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrogen form the habitable background. No single gas suffices; a chemically imbalanced combination strengthens the case.

How do clouds and hazes affect transmission spectra?
Particles in clouds and hazes scatter or absorb light passing through the atmospheric limb, flattening molecular absorption features and raising the spectral baseline. Thick clouds can mask most molecular signatures, making the atmosphere look featureless. Modeling particle size and distribution still extracts temperature and some composition.

Why is the “red edge” considered a potential sign of life?
Chlorophyll in Earth's vegetation sharply raises reflectance near 700 nm, creating the distinctive “red edge.” Detecting a similar spectral jump in an exoplanet's reflected light could hint at a photosynthetic biosphere. It is not unique to life, so mineral causes must be excluded.

How do we probe exoplanet atmospheres?
The most common method is transit transmission spectroscopy: as a planet passes in front of its star, some starlight filters through the atmosphere's limb, where specific molecules imprint absorption lines. Emission and reflection spectra also reveal temperature and composition. Both ground- and space-based telescopes, such as JWST, perform these observations.

What is an exoplanet atmosphere?
An exoplanet atmosphere is the gas layer enveloping a planet's solid or liquid surface, possibly containing hydrogen, helium, water vapor, carbon dioxide, and more. The atmosphere sets the surface temperature and habitability potential. By studying how starlight is absorbed passing through it, astronomers infer its composition.

Why are some exoplanets called super-Earths?
Super-Earths are planets with masses between Earth's and Neptune's (roughly 1–10 Earth masses), mostly rocky or water-rich in composition. They do not exist in our Solar System but are very common among exoplanets, making them key samples for studying planet formation and atmospheres.

Can astronomers directly “see” exoplanets?
Most exoplanets are found indirectly via transits or radial velocity because their light is extremely faint next to the star. Direct imaging has nevertheless captured a few young, bright giant planets far from their stars. Future extremely large telescopes and coronagraphs will improve direct imaging.
