What is a high-redshift galaxy, and why study them?

A high-redshift galaxy is one whose light has been stretched by cosmic expansion to very large redshifts (e.g. z>6, when the universe was under a billion years old), so we see it as it was over ten billion years ago. Studying them lets us observe directly how the first galaxies, stars, and black holes formed, and test models of galaxy evolution and cosmic reionization. They also serve as probes of the early matter distribution and dark-matter halos.

Why do astronomers believe large galaxies grow mainly through hierarchical merging rather than forming in a single monolithic collapse?

Numerical simulations in the cold-dark-matter framework show that small dark matter halos form first and assemble into ever larger ones through continuous merging, with their resident galaxies growing along the way. Observations back this picture up: the Hubble Deep Fields captured many distorted, actively merging galaxies in the high-redshift universe, and stellar streams plus thickened disks in nearby galaxies serve as fossil records of ancient mergers.

What phenomenon does the downsizing picture describe in galaxy studies, and where does it conflict with the naive expectation of hierarchical dark matter assembly?

Hierarchical assembly predicts that structures of larger scale form later, yet near-infrared selected spectroscopy shows the brightest elliptical galaxies completed most of their star formation by around redshift two while dwarf galaxies still experience vigorous star birth today, the peak of star formation shifting progressively later toward lower masses, an inversion named downsizing. This indicates that the star-formation efficiency of baryons is modulated by feedback processes and gas supply history rather than dictated solely by dark-matter merger epochs. Numerical simulations reproduce the premature quenching of massive galaxies only once active-galactic-nucleus feedback is introduced.
