Why do Webb's 'too-early' massive galaxies puzzle astronomers?

Webb sees more, brighter, more mature galaxies in the early Universe (z≈7–10) than models predict; if real, galaxy formation was faster than thought, perhaps needing revised dark-matter halo accretion or stellar initial mass function.

What does Webb's first CO2 detection in an exoplanet atmosphere mean?

Webb clearly identified CO2 in the transmission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-39b—a breakthrough in exoplanet atmospheric chemistry, proving infrared spectra reveal where and how a planet formed.

What are NIRSpec and MIRI each good at?

NIRSpec takes high-resolution near-infrared spectra, resolving galaxy and exoplanet atmospheric lines; MIRI covers mid-infrared, seeing through dust to star formation and warm dust—both are central to Webb's science.

How did JWST change our view of early galaxies?

In surveys like JADES, Webb found bright galaxies at redshifts z>10 and even z>14, more numerous and massive than current cosmological models predict, challenging theories of early galaxy formation.

Has JWST found the Universe's most ancient galaxies?

In JADES, Webb certified galaxies at redshift z≈14 (e.g. JADES-GS-z14-0), when the Universe was only about 300 million years old—among the most ancient galaxy candidates known.

Why can the James Webb Space Telescope see the very early universe clearly?

Webb observes in infrared, where high-redshift galaxy light is stretched, and with a large aperture and high sensitivity it catches faint light from when the universe was only a few hundred million years old.

Why does JWST work at extremely low temperature?

Webb observes mostly infrared, so its own heat would drown the signal; a sunshield cools the mirror and instruments to about -233°C (40 K) by passive radiation alone.

Why does the James Webb Space Telescope observe mainly in infrared rather than focusing on visible light like Hubble?

Because its core targets, galaxies of the early universe, stellar nurseries and cold objects, shine chiefly in infrared. Cosmic expansion stretches light from the most distant galaxies into near-infrared wavelengths, infrared pierces dusty veils to reveal star-forming regions, and cool structures such as protoplanetary disks glow there as well. Webb therefore carries a gold-coated 6.5-meter segmented primary and a large sunshield, running cooled to about 40 kelvin at Sun-Earth Lagrange point 2.
