Millimetre-sized hematite spheres nicknamed 'blueberries' lie scattered in patches on the Martian surface. How did these spherules form, and what kind of ancient environment do they reveal?
The spheres are concretions grown inside porous sedimentary rock: iron-bearing groundwater slowly precipitated iron oxide around nuclei within the pores, building up millimetre-scale balls layer by layer - a process that requires long-lived liquid water. Later, wind erosion stripped away the softer host rock, leaving the resistant hematite spherules exposed in sheets on the surface. They therefore provide direct mineralogical evidence that ancient Mars hosted groundwater activity and locally wet conditions.

How was Mars able to grow giant shield volcanoes like Olympus Mons, rising about twenty-two kilometers above its surroundings and spanning hundreds of kilometers?
Two conditions matter. Martian surface gravity is only about thirty-eight percent of Earth's, so the crust can support far taller volcanic stacks without collapsing. Mars also lacks Earth-style plate tectonics: its lithosphere stayed anchored above a long-lived mantle plume, letting lava erupt and pile up layer upon layer at one site for billions of years, building a single colossal shield instead of an island chain like Hawaii. Hence Olympus Mons ranks among the tallest known volcanoes in the solar system.

Which landforms and mineral clues indicate that ancient Mars may have sustained liquid-water lakes for long periods?
Orbital imagery and rover fieldwork have revealed winding river channels, alluvial fans, and deltas feeding into basins, alongside layered mudstones and water-bearing clays that form only through prolonged contact with water. Within Gale crater, a sedimentary stack several hundred meters thick records lakes repeatedly filling and drying, showing that around 3.5 billion years ago the surface could sustain stable water bodies over long stretches of time. Such ancient lakebeds are now priority targets in searches for past-life signatures.
