Why is Mars's atmosphere so thin?

Mars is small and weakly gravitational, so much of its early atmosphere was stripped by the solar wind; lacking a global magnetic field, it could not shield itself like Earth. Its interior also cooled, ending volcanism that might replenish gas. Together these left Mars with only a thin carbon-dioxide atmosphere.

How long is a one-way Mars trip, and why can't we launch anytime?

What evidence shows Mars once had water?

Mars shows dried-up river channels, deltas and rounded pebbles that only form in flowing water, and probes have found water ice underground. Minerals like hematite and clay also need water to form. Together they show Mars was once warmer and wetter than today.

Why do people want to build a base on Mars?

Mars is more Earth-like than other worlds; studying it informs planetary evolution and could make it a future 'second home'.

How do scientists know Mars once had water?

Orbiters and rovers have found dried riverbeds, deltas, sedimentary layers, plus direct detection of subsurface water ice and clay minerals—all evidence that liquid water flowed on ancient Mars.

How large can Mars's planet-wide dust storms become?

Mars occasionally develops global dust storms that can blanket the entire planet for weeks or months, blocking sunlight from the surface and once crippling a lander's power supply.

Mars may once have had liquid water; why is its atmosphere so thin today?

Mars is small and weakly gravity-bound; once its core cooled and its global magnetic field vanished, the solar wind steadily stripped away the atmosphere, leaving a very low pressure where liquid water cannot persist.

On which planet is the tallest mountain in the solar system, and how high is it?

Why does Mars look red?

Mars is rich in iron oxide, the familiar rust that gives its soil and rocks a red-orange color. Winds spread this dust across the whole planet, even tinting the sky a pale red. This is why Mars is called the 'Red Planet'.

What is special about Olympus Mons on Mars?

Olympus Mons is a shield volcano on Mars about 22 kilometers high, more than twice the height of Mount Everest. Its base spans over 600 kilometers, making it the tallest known volcano in the solar system. Mars's low gravity and lack of plate tectonics let such a giant build up slowly.

How many moons does Mars have, and what are they like?

Mars has two small, irregularly shaped moons, Phobos and Deimos, looking like captured asteroids. Phobos is the larger and orbits so close that it is slowly spiraling inward by about 2 centimeters per year. Both are tiny and heavily cratered.

What are Mars's two small moons called, and why are they irregularly shaped?

Phobos and Deimos are small, with gravity too weak to pull them into spheres, so they look like lumpy potatoes; they may be captured asteroids.
