Why is the Moon slowly moving away from Earth?

Tidal friction transfers some of Earth's rotational angular momentum into the Moon's orbit, pushing the Moon outward by about 3.8 centimeters per year. Earth's spin slows slightly as a result, lengthening the day. This is angular-momentum conservation acting in the Earth-Moon system.

How does the Moon help stabilize Earth's axial tilt?

The Moon's gravity acts like an anchor that damps perturbations from other planets, keeping Earth's axial tilt near a steady 23.5 degrees. Without such a large moon the tilt could wobble wildly, causing extreme climate instability. This stability is thought to have helped life persist on Earth.

Why do spring tides occur near the new and full moon?

When the Sun, Moon and Earth line up near new or full moon, their tidal forces add together and produce the largest tidal range, called spring tides. At first and last quarter they sit at right angles and partly cancel, giving neap tides. So spring tides come about every two weeks.

Can humans harness the energy of tides?

Yes. The rise and fall of tides move huge volumes of water, holding significant mechanical energy. People build tidal power plants in bays or estuaries that use the height difference to drive turbines, like France's Rance station. Tides are predictable clean energy, though siting and ecology are concerns.

What is tidal locking, and is it common?

Tidal locking means a body's rotation period matches its orbital period so it always shows one face to its primary, as the Moon does to Earth. It arises from long-term tidal friction and is very common among moons: Charon, Io and many others are locked to their planets. It is widespread beyond the solar system too.

Why does the Moon have almost no atmosphere?

The Moon is small and weakly gravitational, with an escape velocity of only about 2.4 kilometers per second, so gas molecules easily reach it and drift into space. With no magnetic field or geology to replenish gas, any atmosphere cannot persist. The lunar surface is thus nearly a vacuum.

How are ocean tides produced?

Tides are mainly caused by the Moon's uneven pull on different parts of Earth: water on the near and far sides bulges out into high tide. The Sun's gravity adds its own effect, but the Moon contributes about twice as much. Earth's rotation gives most places about two tides per day.

Why can we occasionally see a little of the Moon's far side?

The Moon does not show only its near side; thanks to 'libration', slight wobbles and tilts as it orbits let edge regions appear in turn. Combined, the effects let us see about 59 percent of the lunar surface rather than exactly half. The remaining 41 percent truly stays hidden.

What is the difference between a solar and a lunar eclipse?

A solar eclipse happens at new moon when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and blocks sunlight. A lunar eclipse happens at full moon when Earth lies between the Sun and Moon and casts its shadow onto the Moon. A solar eclipse is visible only along a narrow path, while a lunar eclipse can be seen across half the night side of Earth.

Why does the Moon always show us the same face?

This is tidal locking: Earth's gravity creates bulges and friction in the Moon that slowly braked its spin. Eventually the Moon's rotation period matched its orbital period, both about 27.3 days. So from Earth we always see only the Moon's near side.

Why does the Moon show phases?

The Moon does not shine by itself; the moonlight we see is reflected sunlight. As the Moon orbits Earth, the sunlit half faces us at changing angles, producing new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter. A full lunar cycle, the synodic month, lasts about 29.5 days.

Why is the Moon's surface covered with craters?

The Moon has almost no atmosphere or geological activity, so craters left by asteroid and comet impacts over billions of years are preserved. With no weather erosion or plate tectonics to erase them, the craters remain sharp and dense. Counting crater density even helps estimate the age of lunar surfaces.
