What is tidal locking?

Tidal locking is when an object's spin synchronizes with its orbit due to gravity, always showing one face to its partner; the Moon and many moons are tidally locked.

Why do the lunar maria cover far more of the near side than the farside — what most likely explains this hemispheric dichotomy?

Apollo seismometers and gravity mapping show the nearside crust is about 30 km thick while the farside exceeds 60 km, controlling whether impact basins could be flooded by basalt to form maria. In leading models, late-stage residual melts of the magma ocean enriched in radiogenic elements (KREEP) concentrated beneath the nearside mid-latitudes, and the extra heat prolonged basaltic volcanism there. The giant South Pole–Aitken impact may also have perturbed interior convection, but the thermochemical asymmetry is currently the best-supported explanation.

Why can we never see the Moon's far side from Earth?

The Moon is tidally locked to Earth, with its rotation period equal to its orbital period, so the same face always points toward us; the far side was first photographed by a probe in 1959.

Why do some lunar craters have bright rays radiating outward?

Rays are light-colored material excavated and thrown outward during an impact, extending radially for up to thousands of kilometers. Young craters such as Tycho show crisp rays, while rays on old craters fade and disappear under micrometeorite bombardment and solar wind erosion, so ray prominence helps judge a crater's relative age.

How did lunar maria form, and why do they look darker than the highlands?

Between roughly 3.9 and 3.0 billion years ago, giant impacts on the Moon's near side left huge basins; basaltic lava from partial melting of the mantle then rose through fractures and flooded them, forming the maria. Basalt is rich in iron and titanium and much darker than the highlands' anorthosite, so the maria appear as dark patches.

What is the largest impact basin on the Moon's far side, and why does it matter?

The South Pole-Aitken basin is the Moon's largest and oldest confirmed impact basin, roughly 2,500 km across and more than 8 km deep, exposing deep crustal and possibly upper-mantle material. China's Chang'e-4 landed softly inside it at Von Karman crater and directly probes the surface material there, offering unique samples for studying the Moon's interior.

Why do the near side and far side of the Moon have such different terrain?

The lunar near side is dominated by dark basaltic maria, while the far side is almost entirely bright, rugged highlands with a crust roughly 20 km thicker. The leading explanation ties this dichotomy to lunar magma-ocean crystallization followed by tidal locking: the far side accumulated more aluminum-rich material and a thicker crust that suppressed later basalt flooding. Data from Chang'e 4 at Von Kármán crater in 2019 further suggests the far-side mantle may be enriched in deep-seated minerals like olivine.

Does the Moon affect the sea?

The Moon's gravity tugs seawater toward its side, producing the daily rise and fall of the tides. The Sun pulls a little as well, which is why some tides are stronger than others.

Why does the Moon turn dark red during a total lunar eclipse?

Once the Moon moves into Earth's shadow, the only sunlight reaching it has passed through our atmosphere. The air scatters blue light away and bends red light onto the lunar surface, leaving the Moon a dim coppery red. That is why people call it a blood moon.

Why can a total solar eclipse be seen only in a narrow strip?

The Moon is far smaller than Earth, so the dark inner shadow it casts on the ground is usually only one or two hundred kilometres wide. As the Moon and Earth move, that small shadow sweeps a long narrow track, and only people inside it see totality. Everyone nearby sees a partial eclipse instead.

Why does the Moon get fat and thin — did someone bite it?

Why do we only ever see one side of the Moon?

The Moon takes exactly as long to spin once as it does to circle Earth, a situation called tidal locking. That keeps the same face turned toward us, so spacecraft are needed to see the far side.
