The atmospheres of Venus and Mars are both dominated by carbon dioxide, so why do their surface temperatures differ by hundreds of degrees?
The key difference is total atmospheric mass: Venus's surface pressure is about 92 times Earth's, while Mars holds only about 0.6% of an atmosphere, and the thick CO2 envelope drives a runaway greenhouse effect on Venus. A global layer of sulfuric-acid clouds further traps outgoing infrared radiation while scattering sunlight into a complex radiative balance. As a result, Venus bakes at roughly 735 K, whereas Mars, with its thin air and low heat capacity, averages only about 210 K.

What is the exoplanet radius–mass relation?
Planets of the same radius can differ greatly in mass: rocky ones are dense, puffy ones hold lots of gas; this relation separates super-Earths from water worlds and mini-Neptunes.

Why might a hot Jupiter have a temperature inversion?
In some hot Jupiters, high-altitude molecules (TiO, VO) absorb stellar UV and heat the upper layer, creating a temperature inversion where temperature rises with height—flipping some lines from absorption to emission, a focus of exoplanet study.

Venus is nearly Earth's twin in size, yet its surface environment is drastically different. What accounts for the key difference?
Venus is indeed close to Earth in size - about 5% smaller in radius and roughly 18% less massive - yet it sustains a 92-bar CO2 atmosphere whose runaway greenhouse keeps the surface near 740 K. Lacking plate tectonics and a strong magnetic field, Venus lost its water through photodissociation and solar-wind stripping, so carbon was never locked away by silicate weathering and carbonate deposition as on Earth. Once the runaway greenhouse started, water loss and carbon buildup reinforced each other, producing today's hostile surface.

Why are Venus, Earth and Mars atmospheres so different?
All three started with CO2 and water; Earth locked carbon via plate tectonics and life and kept liquid water, Venus suffered runaway greenhouse evaporation, and Mars lost its air to solar wind because of weak magnetic field and gravity.
