How did scientists demonstrate an ocean beneath Europa's icy crust?
The Galileo spacecraft found that Europa generates an induced magnetic field as it moves through Jupiter's magnetosphere, the strongest evidence for an electrically conductive layer beneath the surface, most plausibly a salty ocean. At the same time, the moon's surface cracks, ice rafts and chaotic terrain reveal ongoing crustal activity and a very young surface age. Tidal heating supplies the energy that keeps the ocean liquid. Estimates put the ocean's depth at tens to more than a hundred kilometers.

Why does Io host the most volcanically active surface in the solar system?
Io is locked in orbital resonance with Europa and Ganymede, so Jupiter's enormous tides alternately squeeze and stretch it. Tidal friction converts this mechanical energy into heat, keeping the interior partially molten. That heat drives hundreds of active volcanoes erupting sulfur and sulfur dioxide, coating the surface in yellow-orange sulfur deposits. Io is thus the most volcanically active body in the solar system and the only one besides Earth confirmed to be erupting today.

At the inner edge of Saturn's Cassini Division, ring particles orbit with periods close to exactly half that of the moon Mimas. What resonance dynamics lie behind this integer ratio?
This radius forms a 2:1 mean-motion resonance with Mimas: every two orbits a particle completes about Saturn, it receives one tug from the moon at the same relative position. Perturbations recurring in phase coherently pump up orbital eccentricity. The enlarged radial excursions intensify collisions among neighboring particles, and the resulting dissipation and angular-momentum exchange sweep material out of the resonance zone, leaving a gap about 4,800 kilometers wide with sharply defined boundaries.

Why do giant planets' rings hug the planet itself while satellites form only farther out? How does the Roche limit draw this boundary?
A planet's pull weakens with distance, so the difference in gravity across a body—the tidal force—grows toward the planet. Inside the Roche limit this force exceeds the self-gravity binding icy rubble together, so material cannot coalesce into moons and spreads into rings instead; beyond the limit self-gravity wins and debris accretes into satellites. Saturn's bright main rings sit inside its Roche limit, and the shepherd moons hugging their outer edge neatly mark this boundary.

What shape are the orbits of planets around the Sun?
Kepler's first law says the orbit of a planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of its two foci, and a circle is only the special case of zero eccentricity. The bound solutions of an inverse-square gravitational force are conic sections anyway, the ellipse being the class that does not escape. Most planets have eccentricities below 0.1, so their orbits look almost circular, and even Mercury, the most eccentric of them, is just over 0.2. The easy mistake: the Sun sits at a focus rather than the center, so a planet's distance from the Sun really does change over a year, but the seasons do not come from that; and since the planets perturb one another, a real orbit is not a perfectly closed ellipse either.

What are Mars' polar caps made of, and why do they change with the seasons?
The permanent northern polar cap of Mars is made of water ice several kilometers thick, while the permanent southern cap is dominated by carbon-dioxide ice, with water ice beneath it. In winter, carbon dioxide from the atmosphere condenses onto the caps, making them expand dramatically, and in spring the dry ice sublimates away, shrinking them. This seasonal carbon-dioxide cycle drives the annual waxing and waning of the Martian polar caps.

Olympus Mons is the tallest volcano in the solar system, rising about 21 km above the Martian datum and spanning 600 km, while Valles Marineris is the largest canyon system, stretching roughly 4,000 km. With no plate tectonics on Mars, volcanoes pile up over fixed hot spots, building giant shield volcanoes. Valles Marineris formed mainly through crustal extension (rifting), closely linked to the stresses produced by the Tharsis uplift.

Mars was once warm and wet, so why is it now cold and dry?
One key cause is that Mars lost its atmosphere: lacking a global magnetic field, the solar wind strips atmospheric molecules directly, and the MAVEN spacecraft has measured losses of roughly 100 grams per second. As the atmosphere thinned, the greenhouse effect weakened, surface water evaporated or froze, and Mars became the cold, dry desert world of today.

Why is a day on Venus longer than its year?
Venus turns extremely slowly, needing about 243 Earth days for a single spin, while it circles the Sun in only 225 Earth days. It also rotates backwards, so on Venus the Sun rises in the west.

Could Jupiter's Great Red Spot disappear?
Records from the past century show the Great Red Spot shrinking and growing rounder, even as its inner winds speed up slightly. It may break apart some day, though scientists cannot yet predict when.

What are Saturn's rings made of?
Saturn's rings are countless chunks of ice and rock circling the planet together. Most pieces are as small as snowballs, though a few are as big as a house.

What exactly separates a dwarf planet from a planet?
Both orbit the Sun and both are rounded by their own gravity, but a planet must also have swept its orbital neighbourhood clear. Pluto, Ceres and Makemake have not managed that, so they are classed as dwarf planets.

Will Saturn's rings last forever?
Measurements show ring material slowly raining down onto Saturn, a process nicknamed ring rain. At the present rate the rings could fade noticeably over something like a hundred million years. On human timescales that is still almost forever.

Mercury is closest to the Sun, so why isn't it the hottest planet?
Mercury has almost no atmosphere, so the heat it soaks up by day escapes quickly and its nights turn freezing. Venus keeps its heat locked in under a thick atmosphere, which makes it hotter on average.

Why is Pluto not called a planet anymore?

How was Neptune calculated into existence?
In the 19th century, observed deviations in Uranus's orbit implied an unseen perturbing planet; Le Verrier computed its position mathematically, and Galle observed Neptune in 1846 based on that prediction.

Why are the rocky planets and the gas giants so different?
When the Solar System formed, the inner region was hot and only rock and metal could condense, so Mercury through Mars became small, dense worlds. Farther out it was cold enough for ice and gas to gather, letting planets grow huge and light. That is why Jupiter and Saturn are mostly hydrogen and helium.

What does an object need in order to be called a planet?
The International Astronomical Union says a planet must orbit the Sun, be round because of its own gravity, and have cleared other small bodies from its orbit. Only an object that meets all three rules counts.
