What controversial signal did the EDGES experiment detect?
EDGES reported a 21-cm absorption signal deeper and colder than expected; if real it implies the early gas was unusually cold or there was extra background radiation—a result still fiercely debated.

What is special about the first stars (Population III)?
Population III stars were the very first stars, formed from pristine hydrogen–helium gas in early dark-matter halos with essentially no elements heavier than helium (near-zero metallicity). Because heavy elements help gas radiate away heat, their absence let the gas collapse into very massive (tens to hundreds of solar masses), hot, short-lived stars. Their intense ultraviolet light and the first heavy elements from their supernovae drove cosmic reionization and seeded later chemical evolution.

What is the 21-centimeter line and how does it probe the early Universe?
Neutral hydrogen's hyperfine transition emits 21-cm radio waves; their redshifted wavelengths record hydrogen distribution before and after reionization, a unique probe of cosmic dawn (e.g. SKA, HERA).

What happened during the universe's reionization epoch?
After the cosmic microwave background formed (~380,000 years after the Big Bang) and the universe entered its dark ages, the ultraviolet light from the first stars and galaxies gradually reionized the pervasive neutral hydrogen, splitting it back into protons and free electrons. This reionization epoch spanned roughly z≈6–20 (about 400–1000 million years after the Big Bang) and marks the transition from a mostly neutral to an ionized universe. It ended the cosmic dark ages and shaped all later galaxy evolution.

What era does cosmic dawn refer to?
Cosmic dawn refers to the era when the first stars and galaxies formed and began emitting ultraviolet light into the surrounding neutral hydrogen, initiating reionization—roughly z≈20–30, or about 100–200 million years after the Big Bang. It marks the end of the cosmic dark ages and the beginning of the luminous universe. It is a key transition between the primordial cosmos and today's galaxies.
