How does the solar nebula hypothesis explain the compositional zoning of the Solar System (terrestrial inside, giants outside)?
In the inner protoplanetary disk temperatures were too high for volatile ices to condense, leaving only refractory rock and metal to build terrestrial planets. Beyond the snow line, water ice and other volatiles could accumulate, enabling ice- and gas-rich giant planets; this temperature gradient is the root cause of the compositional zoning.

Why is Io the most volcanically active body in the Solar System?
The answer lies in orbital resonance and tidal heating. Io, Europa, and Ganymede are locked in the Laplace resonance, their orbital periods in simple integer ratios, which keeps Io's orbit eccentric. Each circuit, Jupiter's gravity flexes the moon, and the internal friction from repeated distortion generates heat enough to sustain about 400 active volcanoes. Its surface is endlessly resurfaced by sulphur compounds, producing a vivid, colourful terrain.

How do the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud differ in their formation?
The Kuiper Belt lies just beyond Neptune at about 30 to 50 astronomical units and is a disk of icy bodies formed at the edge of the protoplanetary disk, with orbits near the ecliptic. The Oort Cloud is a distant spherical reservoir made largely of objects scattered outward by the giant planets and later shaped by galactic tides and passing stars.

What is the planetary migration hypothesis (Nice model) for the solar system?
The Nice model proposes that the giant planets' orbits were once unstable and underwent major migrations, flinging many small bodies inward and outward. This is thought to have caused the later heavy bombardment and shaped the structure of the outer solar system.

About what is the Solar System's inclination to the galactic plane, and what is the observational significance of this geometry?
The ecliptic plane of the Solar System is inclined about 60 degrees to the galactic plane, yet because the line of intersection of the two planes lies near Sagittarius, the direction of the Galactic center actually sits close to the ecliptic. This geometry shapes the sky distribution of interstellar dust extinction and dictates survey strategies and difficulties when observing objects near the Galactic plane.

How do solar flares and coronal mass ejections differ, and which is more likely to trigger a geomagnetic storm?
A solar flare is an explosive burst of electromagnetic radiation from magnetic reconnection in the solar atmosphere; its X-rays and ultraviolet arrive at light speed and mainly disturb the ionosphere. A coronal mass ejection (CME), by contrast, hurls billions of tons of plasma and its frozen-in magnetic field into space, taking one to three days to reach Earth. It is the CME's magnetic field interacting with Earth's magnetosphere that produces the strongest geomagnetic storms. A CME is therefore far more likely than a flare to trigger a major geomagnetic storm.

The Kuiper belt is a ring of icy bodies 30 to 50 astronomical units beyond Neptune, lying mostly near the ecliptic and home to Pluto, Eris, and others; it is the source of short-period comets. The Oort cloud is instead a spherical shell enveloping the whole Solar System, from a few thousand out to roughly 100,000 AU, holding trillions of icy objects that passing stars nudge inward as long-period comets.
Why is the angular momentum distribution of the solar system considered a puzzle?
The Sun holds about 99.8 percent of the solar system's mass but only roughly 1 percent of its angular momentum, with most of it locked in the planets' orbits. This is usually explained by magnetic braking, where the young star's magnetic field couples to the protoplanetary disk, and remains a classic problem in star formation.

In June 1908, a small body tens of meters across exploded about 8 km above the Tunguska River in Siberia, releasing energy equivalent to roughly ten megatons of TNT and flattening more than 2,000 square kilometers of forest, with almost no crater left behind. It shows that even modest asteroids can cause regional devastation, and it is a key case for modern planetary defense research.

The Galileo spacecraft measured an induced magnetic field around Europa that can only be explained by a conductive salty layer under the surface. Its ice is criss-crossed with fractures and shows few craters, signs of a young, actively resurfaced shell. The ocean below may hold twice as much water as all of Earth's seas, kept liquid by tidal heating from Jupiter.

Because they combine the liquid water, energy, and chemistry life needs. Tidal heating keeps their subsurface oceans liquid, and the thick ice shields the water from harsh space radiation; Enceladus even vents plumes that a spacecraft can sample from orbit. Together with the relics of ancient Martian lakes, these ocean moons are currently the most practical candidates in the search for life beyond Earth.

About 66 million years ago, a body roughly 10 km across struck what is now the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, forming the about 180 km Chicxulub crater. The impact lofted dust that blocked sunlight, triggering an impact winter that killed about three-quarters of species, including the non-avian dinosaurs; the discovery of a worldwide iridium anomaly in the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary layer in 1980 provided the key evidence for an asteroid.

Meteorites fall into three main classes by composition, stony, iron and stony-iron, with stony meteorites further split into chondrites and achondrites. Chondrites contain millimeter-sized chondrules from the early solar system and have undergone almost no parent-body heating, preserving material from 4.56 billion years ago, so they are regarded as the most primitive meteorites.

How do meteor showers form, and why do the same showers recur at fixed dates each year?
Meteor showers come from comets, which shed streams of dust grains along their orbits. Each year Earth passes through the same debris stream at the same orbital location; grains burn up in the atmosphere at high speed, producing the shower. Because Earth crosses the stream at a fixed orbital position, a given shower returns at about the same calendar date every year.

In the 19th century astronomers noticed that Uranus deviated from the orbit predicted by Newtonian gravity. Working independently, Le Verrier in France and Adams in Britain calculated that an unknown outer planet must be perturbing Uranus. In 1846 astronomers found Neptune exactly where the calculations pointed, a triumph of celestial mechanics.

Is Jupiter Earth's protector or a threat?
It does both. Jupiter's immense gravity deflects some long-period comets and asteroids, flinging them out of the inner Solar System and lowering Earth's impact odds; conversely, it can also sling objects toward us, raising the risk. The net effect depends on an object's origin and orbit, and scientists still have no single settled answer.

Why was Pluto removed from the planet list?
In 2006 the IAU required planets to have 'cleared their orbital neighborhood'; Pluto shares its region with many similar bodies, so it was reclassified as a dwarf planet.

What is tidal locking and why does the Moon always show us the same face?
Earth's gravity raises tidal bulges on the Moon, and long-term tidal friction synchronized its spin with its orbit, so the Moon always keeps the same face toward us.

Why is Jupiter's moon Io the most volcanically active body in the solar system?

What is the leading scientific hypothesis for the origin of the Moon?
The leading “giant-impact hypothesis” holds that about 4.5 billion years ago a Mars-sized protoplanet (often called Theia) struck the early Earth, and debris from the impact accreted into the Moon. Apollo lunar samples support this, notably showing Moon rocks and Earth's mantle share nearly identical oxygen isotopes.

Why is Venus so hot?
Venus has a surface temperature of about 465 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest planet in the Solar System. Its atmosphere is almost entirely carbon dioxide with thick clouds of sulfuric acid, producing a runaway greenhouse effect that traps heat. Although Venus is farther from the Sun than Mercury, this greenhouse effect heats its surface enough to melt lead.

Why does Titan get to have a thick atmosphere?
Titan is the only moon in the Solar System with a thick atmosphere, its surface pressure about 1.5 times Earth's and composed mainly of nitrogen. Far from the Sun and bitterly cold, methane exists as a liquid there, driving a methane cycle like Earth's water cycle, complete with rain, rivers, and lakes. When the Huygens probe landed on its surface in 2005, it photographed terrain carved by methane rivers.

Why does Mercury have such extreme temperature swings?
Mercury is very close to the Sun, so its dayside can exceed 400 degrees Celsius while its nightside drops to about minus 170 degrees Celsius. It has almost no atmosphere to store and redistribute heat, and its slow rotation makes each day and night very long, allowing surface heat to escape quickly. These factors make Mercury one of the most thermally extreme worlds in the Solar System.

How do auroras form, and why are they mostly seen near the poles?
Charged particles from the solar wind are guided by Earth's magnetic field lines into the upper atmosphere near the poles, where they collide with and excite oxygen and nitrogen atoms; as the atoms return to their ground state they emit light of specific wavelengths, creating auroras. Because field lines converge at the poles, particles enter mainly in polar regions, so auroras concentrate at high latitudes.

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and blocks the Sun's light, visible only along a narrow path on Earth. A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth lies between the Sun and Moon and casts its shadow onto the Moon, dimming it so that half the Earth can see it. Solar eclipses occur at new Moon, and lunar eclipses at full Moon.

How do the solar wind and Earth's magnetic field interact?
The Sun continuously releases a stream of charged particles, the solar wind, moving at hundreds of kilometers per second. Earth's magnetic field creates a magnetosphere that deflects most of the wind like a barrier; the wind forms a bow shock upstream, and the field traps some charged particles in the Van Allen belts.

What happened during the 1859 Carrington Event, and why do we remain alert to a repeat?
In September 1859 an extreme solar storm produced the strongest geomagnetic storm on record: induced currents set low-latitude telegraph systems on fire, and auroras were even seen in the Caribbean. The 1859 world depended mainly on telegraphs, while today's power grids, satellite navigation and communications are far more vulnerable, so scientists study a similar superstorm as a worst-case scenario given its potentially enormous economic cost.

Why does Uranus rotate almost “on its side,” and what kind of rings does it have?
Uranus has an axial tilt of about 98°, essentially rolling on its side, most likely from a giant off-center impact early in its history. It also has a set of dark, narrow rings lying in its equatorial plane; because of the near-sideways spin, the whole ring system is nearly perpendicular to the orbital plane, mapped in detail by Voyager 2.

Why does Mercury have an unusually large, iron-rich metallic core?
Mercury's core takes up about 85% of its radius, a far larger metal fraction than other terrestrial planets. MESSENGER data suggest this may result from a giant impact early in solar-system history that stripped much of its silicate mantle, or from preferential iron accretion in the hot protoplanetary disk.

Why did the asteroid belt fail to assemble into a planet?
Jupiter is the main culprit. Its powerful gravity keeps stirring up the belt, giving the bodies there too much relative speed so collisions smash them apart rather than gluing them together, and its orbital resonances sweep many objects out entirely. All the belt's material together is under four percent of the Moon's mass — the raw stuff of a planet that never grew up.

Solar activity rises and falls on a roughly 11-year cycle, most directly seen in sunspot counts, which climb from minimum to maximum and back. Satellites such as the Solar Dynamics Observatory continuously monitor sunspots, flares and magnetic fields, and also reveal that the Sun's overall magnetic polarity flips every 22 years or so, the full magnetic cycle.

Why are comet orbits so long and stretched out?
Most comets are born in the distant Kuiper belt or Oort cloud, originally creeping slowly around the fringes of the Solar System. When the gravity of the planets or a passing star nudges them inward, they plunge in along extremely elongated ellipses, with one end grazing the Sun and the other reaching far out. That is why some comets return every few hundred years and others every few million.

Why does Uranus rotate almost on its side?
Uranus has an axial tilt of about 98 degrees, so it appears to roll on its side as it orbits the Sun. Scientists generally think a massive object struck it early in its formation and knocked it over. This extreme tilt gives Uranus poles that each experience decades of continuous daylight or darkness.

What is the difference between a meteor and a meteorite?
A meteor is the streak of light made when a small space rock burns up by friction in Earth's atmosphere, often called a shooting star. If the rock survives and lands on the ground, we call it a meteorite. So a meteor is a flash of light in the sky, while a meteorite is a rock that has fallen to the ground.

Why is Jupiter called Earth's protector?
Jupiter is so massive that its strong gravity deflects or captures many comets and asteroids that might otherwise head toward the inner Solar System. This gravitational sweeping greatly reduces the number of dangerous impactors reaching Earth. However, Jupiter can also occasionally send objects inward, so it acts both as a shield and as a disturbant.

Why was Pluto reclassified as a dwarf planet?
In 2006 the IAU ruled that a planet must have cleared its orbital neighborhood of other bodies. Pluto orbits the Sun and is roughly round, but it has not cleared the many similar objects in the Kuiper Belt, so it was classed as a dwarf planet. The decision reflected deeper understanding of the small-body population in the outer Solar System.

Why is Venus the hottest planet at its surface, even hotter than Mercury which is closer to the Sun?
Venus has a surface temperature of about 465 °C, hotter than Mercury, because its thick atmosphere is almost entirely carbon dioxide with sulfuric-acid clouds, producing an extreme greenhouse effect. Sunlight heats the surface, but the heat cannot easily escape as infrared radiation, so it builds up.
