What is a gravity assist (slingshot)?
A gravity assist uses a planet's gravity to speed up or redirect a probe, borrowing the planet's orbital momentum to save fuel for farther targets—Voyager used Jupiter and Saturn this way.

How do astronauts live in space?
In a space station there is no gravity, so astronauts float, and they must strap themselves into sleeping bags to rest. They eat special dried or compressed food and drink carefully so water droplets do not float around. Every day they exercise to keep their bones and muscles from weakening in weightlessness.

What are geosynchronous and geostationary satellites?
A geosynchronous satellite has an orbital period equal to Earth's rotation (about 24 hours); if it is circular and over the equator, it stays nearly fixed above one ground point, called geostationary. Communications, weather, and broadcast satellites use this orbit so dishes can aim steadily. They sit about 36,000 km above the ground.

What are Mars rovers for?
Mars rovers are mobile science labs that land on Mars and drive around to drill rocks, analyze soil, and send back photos. They help us find evidence that Mars once had water and assess whether life could have existed. Curiosity and Perseverance are the most advanced rovers to date.

Where are the Voyager probes now?
Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 and 2 used planetary gravity to fly by outer planets like Jupiter and Saturn. They have now crossed the heliopause into interstellar space, becoming the most distant human-made objects. They still send back precious data about the interstellar medium, though faintly.

What is the gravity assist effect?
A gravity assist uses a planet's gravity to speed up or redirect a passing spacecraft, saving fuel and reaching farther targets. When a probe swings by in the planet's direction of motion, it gains extra speed like a stone flung from a sling. Voyager and many planetary missions rely on it for long journeys.

What is an asteroid sample-return mission?
An asteroid sample-return mission sends a spacecraft to collect rock and dust from an asteroid and bring it back to Earth labs for detailed analysis. Japan's Hayabusa series and NASA's OSIRIS-REx both succeeded in returning samples, helping study the Solar System's most primitive material. These samples preserve early-Solar-System composition more completely than meteorites.

Why is sending humans to Mars so difficult?
Mars is so far that a one-way trip takes months, and a round trip with stay could last years, demanding large, reliably recycled supplies of food, water, and oxygen. Intense radiation in space and on the surface threatens health, and the thin atmosphere gives too little braking for easy landing. These challenges keep crewed Mars missions unrealized so far.

Webb is the successor to Hubble, with a 6.5-meter mirror observing mainly in infrared, able to see through dust and detect extremely distant, early-universe galaxies. It can also analyze molecules like water and carbon dioxide in exoplanet atmospheres. After its late-2021 launch it greatly reshaped our view of the early universe.
