How does a gravity assist (slingshot) save fuel?

When a probe swings past a planet, the planet's gravity bends and changes its speed and direction, like a slingshot. In the Sun's frame the craft 'steals' a tiny bit of the planet's orbital momentum to speed up or slow down, while the planet is essentially unaffected. The Voyagers used repeated assists to leave the solar system.

Why do low-orbit satellites eventually fall back into the atmosphere?

Even hundreds of kilometers up, a trace of atmosphere creates tiny drag that slowly bleeds orbital energy and lowers altitude. Lower altitude means more drag, a positive feedback that ends in reentry and burn-up. That is why stations periodically raise their orbit to stay alive.

What kinds of propellants do rockets commonly use?

Rocket propellants split into liquid and solid types: liquids like LOX-kerosene or LH2-LOX give high efficiency and throttle control, while solids are simple and quick but hard to control. There are also storable hydrazines and the emerging methane fuels. Missions weigh performance, cost and safety when choosing.

Why is the Hohmann transfer orbit the most fuel-efficient path for interplanetary travel?

A Hohmann transfer is a half-ellipse tangent to both the departure and arrival circular orbits, requiring only two velocity impulses at the tangent points to move between coplanar circular orbits with the least delta-v. By exploiting the natural geometry of the gravity field it minimizes fuel use and is the basic trajectory for most probes.

Why does a returning spacecraft glow red-hot?

A returning capsule plunges into the atmosphere at about 7.8 km/s, and compression plus friction heat its front to over a thousand degrees Celsius. The heating is mainly from shock compression, not simple friction. Ablative heat shields sacrifice themselves to protect crew and instruments.

Why doesn't the International Space Station (ISS) fall back down to Earth?

The ISS orbits about 400 km up at roughly 7.7 km/s, fast enough that its fall is continually matched by the curve of Earth's surface, so it keeps circling instead of dropping. Thin atmospheric drag still slows it, so cargo ships periodically reboost its orbit.

Why do Mars missions wait for a launch window every about 26 months?

Earth and Mars orbit at different speeds, so their relative positions keep changing. Only when Earth catches up and aligns at a specific angle can a fuel-efficient transfer orbit reach Mars, and this favorable geometry recurs about every 26 months. Miss it and you wait over two years.

Why do rockets need multiple stages to send payloads into space?

A single-stage rocket must carry all its fuel and empty tanks the whole way, making it too massive to reach orbital speed. A multi-stage rocket drops the empty shells after each stage burns out, lightening what remains so the surviving engines accelerate more efficiently — this staging is the key to reaching orbit.

What is the first cosmic velocity?

The first cosmic velocity is about 7.9 kilometers per second, the minimum speed needed to circle Earth near its surface and become a satellite. Below it the object falls back; at it, it enters low orbit. Faster still, at the second cosmic velocity of about 11.2 km/s, it escapes Earth entirely.

Why can a geostationary satellite seem to hang still in the sky?

A geostationary satellite orbits about 36,000 kilometers above the equator with a period equal to Earth's 24-hour rotation and in the same direction. From the ground it appears fixed over one longitude, as if motionless. Communications, TV and weather satellites often use this orbit.

What is space debris, and why is it a problem?

Space debris is defunct satellites, spent rocket stages and fragments from collisions, concentrated in low Earth orbit. Moving at extreme speeds, even tiny pieces can wreck a satellite on impact. Growing numbers risk a chain reaction of collisions that makes orbits ever more hazardous.

Why do rockets usually launch vertically?

A rocket must climb through the dense lower atmosphere quickly to reduce drag and structural stress, and vertical ascent gains altitude fastest. It still needs huge horizontal speed to orbit, so it pitches over gradually after liftoff. Horizontal takeoff would face far harder drag and control problems.

What is escape velocity?

Escape velocity is the minimum starting speed needed to break free of a body's gravity without further thrust. For Earth it is about 11.2 km/s, but for the Moon only about 2.4 km/s. The larger the mass and the smaller the radius, the higher it is; near a black hole it exceeds the speed of light.

How can a rocket propel itself in space?

A rocket works by conservation of momentum, Newton's third law: it ejects gas backward at high speed and the gas pushes the rocket forward. Vacuum does not matter, because propulsion relies on the expelled mass, not on surrounding air. That is why rockets, not airplanes, are suited to space.

Why do satellites use solar panels for power?

In space sunlight is nearly continuous, so solar panels convert light directly into electricity to power a satellite for years. The near-vacuum and lack of weather make photovoltaic power steady and reliable. Only probes that travel far from the Sun, where sunlight is weak, switch to nuclear batteries.

How high above Earth is the International Space Station?

The International Space Station orbits at about 400 kilometers above Earth, circling the planet roughly every 90 minutes. This altitude is still inside the thin upper atmosphere, so the station periodically fires thrusters to counter drag. From the ground it can sometimes be seen by eye as a slow-moving bright star.

What is an orbit, and why don't satellites fall down?

An orbit is the path an object follows when it moves sideways fast enough to curve around another body. A satellite is not failing to fall; it is constantly 'falling' at about 8 kilometers per second while Earth's surface curves away beneath it, so it never reaches the ground. Like a stone thrown horizontally, the faster it goes the farther it lands, and beyond a certain speed it circles the Earth.
