How does a gravity assist speed up a probe without burning fuel?

In the planet's frame, the probe enters and leaves with equal speed, only its direction changes — an elastic scattering; but in the Sun's frame the planet itself moves at some ten-plus kilometres per second along its orbit, so the probe's velocity is dragged and altered by the planet's orbital speed, gaining or losing energy depending on the geometry. Jupiter travels around the Sun at about 13 kilometres per second, and Voyager slingshotted behind it to reach the speed needed to escape the Sun.

Why is the second cosmic velocity exactly the square root of two times the first?

Escape velocity requires the object to depart with exactly zero total mechanical energy, meaning its kinetic energy equals the magnitude of its gravitational potential energy. Solving for speed gives the square root of 2GM over r, while the low-orbit circular speed is the square root of GM over r, so the two differ by exactly the square root of two, about 11.2 kilometres per second at Earth's surface. The ratio follows purely from energy, independent of the planet's density.

Why must rockets carry so much fuel, and what does the Tsiolkovsky equation reveal?

The Tsiolkovsky rocket equation gives the speed increment as the exhaust velocity times the natural log of the mass ratio. Reaching orbit needs about 9.4 kilometres per second of delta-v, while chemical rockets exhaust at only about three kilometres per second, so the equation yields an initial mass over twenty times the empty mass, which is why fuel dominates a rocket's weight. Crucially, delta-v grows logarithmically with the mass ratio, so each extra bit of speed demands exponentially more fuel; staging is how engineers dodge that penalty.

Why is light speed a natural barrier for interstellar travel?

Relativity says energy balloons as you approach light speed, with time dilation, making light-year trips extremely hard.

Why is the first cosmic velocity 7.9 kilometres per second?

To stay in a low orbit without falling, a satellite must have Earth's gravity act exactly as the centripetal force. Equating gravity with mass times centripetal acceleration gives about 7.9 kilometres per second, the minimum speed for a circular orbit skimming the surface. Slower than that, the satellite falls back to the ground; faster, its orbit becomes an ellipse.

How did the Voyager probes manage to leave the Solar System?

Launched in 1977, the Voyagers repeatedly gained speed through planetary gravity assists: Voyager 2 swung past Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune in the famous grand tour. With this borrowed momentum the probes reached escape speed without hauling huge fuel tanks. Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause in 2012 and Voyager 2 in 2018, and both now operate in interstellar space.

Why are almost all rockets multi-stage?

A single-stage rocket would have to haul its heavy tanks, engines, and structure all the way to orbit, wasting most of its fuel on accelerating that dead weight. A multi-stage rocket drops the emptied shell once its fuel is spent, leaving a lighter vehicle that can fly faster with the same propellant. The Saturn V had three stages and the Falcon 9 has two big sections; staging is the standard way to beat the penalty of gravity.

How do rovers land safely on Mars?

Landing runs through entry, descent, and touchdown. The probe slams into the thin atmosphere at about 20,000 kilometres per hour, sheds speed with a heat shield, then deploys a supersonic parachute. The final stage differs by mission: Spirit and Opportunity bounced in airbags, while Curiosity and Perseverance used the sky crane, lowering each rover on cables over the last few dozen metres.

How does a spacecraft in space catch up with the space station and dock with it?

The key is that the station and the spacecraft both circle at the same altitude and speed, so their relative velocity is almost nil and no high-speed chase is needed. The ship first drops into a slightly lower, faster orbit to catch up, then climbs back to the same height at the right moment, fine-tunes with small thrusters, and finally approaches at a few centimetres per second to latch onto the docking port.
