How can complex organic molecules like methanol form inside molecular cloud cores whose temperature is only about ten kelvin?
Two-body gas-phase reactions face prohibitive barriers at such temperatures, so the dominant chemistry happens on cold dust-grain surfaces. Once CO freezes out, H atoms produced by cosmic-ray or UV ionization can tunnel and add onto the ice, hydrogenating CO stepwise to HCO, H2CO, and finally CH3OH. Laboratory experiments on low-temperature ices have reproduced this chain, confirming that surface chemistry rather than thermal gas-phase reactions builds complex molecules in cold clouds.

Why are there no infinitely massive stars — and why no plague of failed brown dwarfs either?
Physics clamps both ends. The cap: brighter stars push radiation pressure harder against their own gas, and beyond the Eddington limit (around 150 solar masses) light blows away the envelope, while overmassive protostars self-regulate via eruptive accretion — observations top out near two hundred solar masses. The floor: below 0.08 solar masses cores never reach the tens of millions of kelvin needed for hydrogen ignition; after gravitational heat dissipates they limp along on deuterium, cooling as brown dwarfs — actually numerous, just too dim to census. Those two numbers, 0.08 and 150, bound the entire main-sequence kingdom.

What is a planetary nebula?
A planetary nebula is the outer shell ejected by a low-to-medium mass star at the end of its red-giant phase, lit by the central white dwarf's UV light—despite the name, it has nothing to do with planets.

How does a star's mass determine its lifetime?
More massive stars have more fuel but burn far more furiously and die sooner; the Sun will live about 10 billion years, while massive stars may last only millions.

Since molecular hydrogen emits almost nothing inside cold dark clouds, why do astronomers fall back on carbon monoxide to trace that molecular gas?
As a homonuclear molecule, hydrogen lacks a permanent dipole moment, so its dipole rotational transitions are forbidden, and at the roughly ten-kelvin temperature of dark clouds even its quadrupole lines stay unexcited, leaving it effectively invisible. Carbon monoxide does carry a permanent dipole; its lowest rotational line at 115 GHz needs only about five kelvin to excite and shines brightly throughout cold molecular gas. Converting carbon-monoxide intensity into hydrogen column density through abundance models yields the standard astrophysical conversion factor method.
