How do astronomers weigh a star?

The mass of an isolated star cannot be measured directly, but binary systems provide a way. Observing the orbital period and semimajor axis of two stars and applying Newtonian gravity with Kepler's third law yields the system's total mass. If each star's orbit around the barycenter is also measured, the individual masses can be separated. Binary orbit analysis is thus essentially the only reliable direct route to stellar masses.

What are blue stragglers, and why do they look younger than other cluster stars?

Blue stragglers appear in old clusters such as globulars yet are bluer and brighter than their siblings, seemingly violating the expectation that all cluster stars formed together. The leading explanation is that in the crowded cluster interior they gain mass by merging with or accreting from companions. The added mass boosts their hydrogen supply and surface temperature. As a result they appear younger than their true age on the H-R diagram.

How is the strength of a star's magnetic field measured?

A stellar magnetic field splits the atomic energy levels in the star's atmosphere, producing multiple fine line components with distinct polarization, an effect called the Zeeman effect. Measuring the splitting and polarization of spectral lines reveals the field strength. Besides the Sun, astronomers have measured far stronger fields on many stars. Magnetar surfaces can reach up to 10^15 gauss.

Why are globular clusters regarded as fossils for dating the Milky Way?

Globular clusters formed nearly all at once, with no subsequent generations of stars. As a result, the turn-off point of their member stars on the H-R diagram directly yields the cluster's evolutionary age. Stellar evolution models date the oldest clusters to roughly 11 to 13 billion years. This sets a lower limit on the age of the Milky Way and of the universe, consistent with cosmological age estimates.

How are Cepheid variables used to measure distances to remote galaxies?

Cepheid variables obey a strict period-luminosity relation. By measuring a Cepheid's pulsation period, astronomers can infer its true luminosity. Comparing that absolute luminosity with the observed apparent brightness and applying the inverse-square law then yields the distance. Hubble Space Telescope measurements of Cepheids are a cornerstone of the extragalactic distance scale and the Hubble constant, with a precision of a few percent.

Why are Type Ia supernovae called standard candles?

A Type Ia supernova is the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf after it accretes matter from a companion and approaches the Chandrasekhar limit. Because the explosion happens at nearly the same critical mass, peak luminosities are quite uniform, earning it the name standard candle. In practice, the relation between peak luminosity and the light curve's decline rate provides further calibration. With that calibration, distance measurements become far more precise, allowing astronomers to gauge the distance to the supernova's host galaxy.

How do the proton–proton chain and the CNO cycle differ in powering stars?

Both are nuclear chains fusing hydrogen into helium. The proton–proton chain dominates in cooler, lower-mass stars like the Sun, while the CNO cycle uses carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen as catalysts and is extremely temperature-sensitive, becoming the main energy source in hotter, more massive stars.

Why is the Crab Nebula considered the benchmark supernova remnant?

The Crab Nebula is the remnant of the supernova seen in 1054, accurately recorded as a guest star in Song-dynasty Chinese annals, making it one of the few supernovae with definite historical records. It consists of material ejected in the blast, still expanding at about 1,500 km/s. The expanding shock interacts with the surrounding interstellar medium while the central neutron star (pulsar) keeps injecting energy into the nebula. Because it radiates across nearly every wavelength band, it is the benchmark supernova remnant.

What are brown dwarfs, and why are they called “failed stars”?

Brown dwarfs have masses between planets and stars (about 13–80 times Jupiter's) and their cores are too cool and low-pressure to sustain stable hydrogen fusion, so they cannot shine like true stars. Astronomers often use the “lithium test”: brown dwarfs below a certain mass retain their original lithium.

Why can a main-sequence star remain neither collapsing nor exploding for billions of years?

A main-sequence star sits in hydrostatic equilibrium: the outward pressure from hydrogen fusion in its core exactly balances the inward pull of gravity. The balance is self-regulating — if gravity gains the upper hand, the core compresses and heats up, fusion speeds up, and the pressure rebounds to puff the star back out. As long as hydrogen remains in the core, that negative feedback keeps the star steady.

How do heavy metals like gold and silver form in the universe?

The Big Bang produced only hydrogen, helium, and a trace of lithium, and stellar fusion stops at iron, since fusing anything heavier costs energy instead of releasing it. Elements above iron form by neutron capture, and the rapid r-process takes place mainly in supernovae and extreme events such as neutron-star mergers. The 2017 binary neutron-star merger detected by LIGO and Virgo was observed to forge large amounts of gold and silver.

What does the Chandrasekhar limit imply about the mass upper bound of white dwarfs?

Why can pulsars spin so fast?

Pulsars are spinning neutron stars. When a stellar core collapses, its radius shrinks from a few thousand kilometres (roughly the size of Earth) to about ten, the moment of inertia plummets, and by conservation of angular momentum the spin speeds up dramatically, reaching hundreds of revolutions per second. Radio beams from the magnetic poles sweep across Earth like a lighthouse, registering as a pulse on each pass with a timing as steady as an atomic clock.

A red giant has a hotter core, so why does it look redder?

A red giant is an old star whose core is hot but whose envelope has expanded enormously, so its surface temperature actually drops to a few thousand degrees. The cooler a star's surface, the longer the peak wavelength of its blackbody radiation, shifting toward the red end of the spectrum.
There are two main causes. Geometric ones occur in eclipsing binaries such as Algol, where two stars orbit each other and one periodically covers the other; physical ones occur in pulsating stars like Mira, whose outer layers rhythmically expand and contract, changing temperature and luminosity. Light curves allow the two mechanisms to be distinguished.

Why is a brown dwarf not considered a true star?

A star is defined by sustaining hydrogen fusion in its core, which needs at least about 0.08 times the Sun's mass. A brown dwarf below that threshold never ignites proper hydrogen fusion; it briefly burns a little deuterium when young and then simply contracts and cools, fading steadily. That is why it is often called a failed star.

What relationship do planetary nebulae have with planets?

Planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets; they were named for their round, planet-like appearance in early telescopes. They are glowing shells of gas ejected by low- to intermediate-mass stars like the Sun at the end of life, lit up by ultraviolet light from the central white dwarf.

What is the difference between an emission nebula and a reflection nebula?

An emission nebula's hot interior stars ionize surrounding gas, which glows in characteristic colors as it recombines; for example the Orion Nebula appears red from hydrogen's emission lines. A reflection nebula does not shine on its own but simply scatters light from a nearby star, usually appearing blue because blue light scatters more efficiently off the dust.

What is a white dwarf?

A white dwarf is the remnant of a low- to medium-mass star, supported by electron degeneracy pressure and no longer fusing atoms. It is tiny and extremely dense; a teaspoon of its material weighs several tons.

What actually fills the space between stars?

Interstellar space is not a vacuum; it is filled with extremely tenuous gas and dust collectively called the interstellar medium. The gas is mostly hydrogen, and the dust consists of micrometer-scale carbon and silicate grains; though sparse, this medium makes up a few percent of the Milky Way's visible mass and shapes both star formation and how light travels.

What are the main differences between open clusters and globular clusters?

Open clusters hold a few hundred to a few thousand young stars loosely spread through the galactic disk, such as the Pleiades; globular clusters pack hundreds of thousands to millions of old stars into a ball in the halo. Their ages and compositions also differ: globulars are typically ancient and metal-poor.

Why do more massive stars have shorter lifetimes?

The more massive a star, the hotter and denser its core and the faster hydrogen fuses there. A star's luminosity grows roughly as the 3.5th power of its mass, so a star ten times the Sun's mass burns fuel a thousand times faster and lives only tens of millions of years. A middleweight star like the Sun can instead burn steadily for about ten billion years.

Why is a white dwarf so heavy, and how heavy is a teaspoon of it?

A white dwarf is the leftover core of a star like the Sun, packing about a solar mass into an Earth-sized object, so its density reaches roughly one million grams per cubic centimetre and a teaspoonful weighs several tonnes. It is held up by electron degeneracy pressure: electrons squeezed so tightly they resist any closer packing, which stops gravity from crushing the star further.

Why is the Orion Nebula a natural laboratory for studying star formation?

About 1,350 light-years away, the Orion Nebula is the nearest large star-forming region. It contains a glowing ionized-hydrogen region plus the molecular cloud collapsing within it and hundreds of young stars. Telescopes can resolve protostars, surrounding dusty disks and young stars embedded in ionized gas, letting astronomers watch star formation from birth to maturity.

What decides whether a star ends up as a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole?

The deciding factor is the star's mass at birth. Stars below roughly eight solar masses end their lives as white dwarfs; stars of about eight to twenty-plus solar masses blow up as supernovae and their cores collapse into neutron stars; still more massive cores collapse straight into black holes. Our Sun belongs to the white-dwarf category.

What nuclear reaction mainly powers a star throughout its life?

Sun-like main-sequence stars are powered by the proton–proton (pp) chain in their cores, fusing hydrogen into helium and releasing energy. More massive stars mainly use the carbon–nitrogen–oxygen (CNO) cycle, and when core hydrogen is exhausted the star swells into a red giant and enters later evolutionary stages.

Why do stars twinkle?
