Why did Venus's greenhouse effect run away?

Venus may once have had liquid-water oceans, but intense solar radiation evaporated the water into the air. Water vapor is itself a strong greenhouse gas, so warming released even more, until the oceans boiled away and huge amounts of carbon dioxide built up. This is called a runaway greenhouse effect.

Why are Venus's skies yellow and its rain made of sulfuric acid?

Venus has thick sulfuric-acid clouds high up, formed from volcanic sulfur compounds reacting with sunlight, giving the sky a yellow-white hue. Droplets fall as acid rain but evaporate before reaching the surface because of the heat, creating a rain that never lands. This cloud deck is also a key part of the strong greenhouse effect.

What are Venus's thick clouds made of?

Venus's clouds are made mainly of droplets of concentrated sulfuric acid rather than water like Earth's clouds; this layer reflects most sunlight, making Venus exceptionally bright in the sky.

Why does Venus rotate backwards?

Most planets spin the same way they orbit, but Venus spins the opposite way and very slowly, with a Venus day of about 243 Earth days. One explanation is a giant impact early on that flipped its rotation. Thick clouds and tidal effects may also have slowed and reversed it later.

What is unusual about Venus's rotation?

Venus spins backward (retrograde) compared with most planets, and it rotates so slowly that a single Venus day is longer than its year.

How high is the surface pressure on Venus?

The surface pressure on Venus is about 92 times that of Earth, comparable to the pressure roughly 900 meters deep in Earth's oceans. Combined with temperatures near 465 degrees Celsius, the surface is extremely hostile. The Soviet Venera probes briefly operated on the surface and sent back data.

What is a Venus transit, and why was it once used to measure the Earth-Sun distance?

A Venus transit is Venus passing in front of the Sun; historically, observers at different locations timed the transit to derive parallax and thus the astronomical unit (Earth-Sun distance).

Why is Venus's surface hotter than Mercury's?

Venus's dense carbon-dioxide atmosphere creates a runaway greenhouse effect that traps heat efficiently, raising its surface to about 465°C—hotter than Mercury despite being farther from the Sun.
