What is eusociality, and why are naked mole-rats a rare mammalian example of it?

Eusociality is an advanced social system where reproduction is restricted to a few individuals while most members are non-reproductive and cooperate in raising offspring and defense. Like honeybees, naked mole-rats have a single breeding "queen" and a few males; the rest are sterile workers that dig tunnels—a rare case among mammals.

What is 'kin selection', and why do worker bees forgo breeding to help the queen?

Kin selection says animals may sacrifice their own reproduction to help relatives pass shared genes. Bee sisters are more genetically similar to each other than to their own offspring, so workers help the mother queen raise sisters, spreading genes better than breeding themselves. This is the core of inclusive fitness.

What is meme-like animal song culture; do orcas have dialects?

Different orca clans have distinct calls and hunting songs passed from mother to calf, forming non-genetic traditions akin to culture. These acoustic dialects help clans recognize each other and maintain social bonds. Researchers treat it as a flagship case of animal social learning.

Some shore crabs swarm ashore to spawn at full moon or spring tide—how do they “see” the moon?

They carry lunar/tidal reproductive rhythms, sensing moonlight intensity and water flow. Spring tides bring higher water and less exposed shore, lowering the risk of eggs washing away—so synchronized spawning boosts offspring survival.

Female Belding's ground squirrels emit alarm calls that attract predators to themselves—how does inclusive fitness explain such self-endangering behaviour?

An alarm call raises the caller's own risk of predation yet prompts nearby kin to retreat into burrows. Hamilton's rule states that altruism persists when relatedness r times benefit B exceeds cost C (rB>C). Paul Sherman's field observations found that females staying at their birth site, surrounded by sisters and offspring, call frequently during danger, while dispersing males with few relatives nearby rarely call—and calling rates climb with the number of kin present, matching inclusive-fitness predictions.

Why does a meerkat stand guard on high ground while the group forages?

While a meerkat group forages, one individual climbs to a vantage point as a sentinel, scanning for predators such as hawks and snakes and giving alarm calls that send the group to cover. The sentinel eats less but raises the whole group's survival, a behavior explained by kin selection and reciprocal altruism.

Beyond anemones and clownfish, what other famous 'buddy' relationships exist?

Why do father penguins keep the egg on top of their feet?

Emperor penguin fathers incubate in the Antarctic winter: they balance the egg on their feet and cover it with a belly brood pouch, fasting for about two months against the storm. This keeps the egg off the ice and warm until the mother returns. It is a rare 'super-dad' behavior.

Vampire bats sometimes return from a night's foraging empty-handed—why do successful individuals regurgitate blood to roostmates they are unrelated to?

A vampire bat starves to death after only two or three nights without blood, while successful hunters often come home with a surplus. Roostmates know one another through constant social grooming and remember who has fed them before, so hungry bats receive priority donations from partners they helped earlier. Donating a little blood costs little yet saves a life and secures future help. This individually addressed reciprocity is a classic field demonstration of Trivers's reciprocal altruism, with kinship playing only a supporting role.

How do migratory birds know where and how far to fly?
