What is hibernation?

Hibernation is not ordinary sleep but a deliberately lowered physiological state: the body's temperature set point drops, heart rate, breathing and metabolism slow sharply, body temperature can fall close to ambient, and the fuel is fat stored before autumn. Nor is it one unbroken sleep until spring—animals briefly arouse now and then, and each arousal burns a substantial amount of energy. The confusing neighbor is the small animal that cuts its metabolism for a short spell each day: same mechanism, much shorter bout, so it is not usually called hibernation.

Migratory birds travel tens of thousands of kilometers round trip. How do they navigate?

Migratory birds are multi-sensor navigation systems. By day they steer by the sun's position and their internal clock; by night they use star patterns, especially around Polaris; and they sense Earth's magnetic field, with cryptochrome proteins in the eye possibly converting field direction into a visual signal via a radical-pair mechanism, while structures in the head and nasal area also respond to magnetism. Landmarks such as rivers, mountains and coastlines plus learned memory join in. Different species rely on different cues; first-year birds often fly an inherited compass bearing and refine the route through experience.

What is symbiosis? Give an example.

Symbiosis is a long-term, close association between members of two different species. Clownfish and sea anemones are typical: the stinging cells of the anemone's tentacles generally fail to fire on the clownfish, usually credited to the protective mucus on its skin, so the fish escapes predators, while its scraps and wastes supply the anemone with nitrogen. Note that symbiosis is not the same as mutual benefit - sorted by who gains and who loses it covers mutualism, commensalism and parasitism, and parasitism is still symbiosis; and a given relationship can slide between mutualism and parasitism as conditions change, so the test is whether survival and reproduction really improve for both.

The arthropod exoskeleton constrains growth, so how is molting controlled by hormones?

Arthropods must molt periodically to grow. Neurosecretory cells of the brain release prothoracicotropic hormone (PTTH), which stimulates the prothoracic gland to produce and release the molting hormone ecdysone, triggering dissolution of the old cuticle and formation of a new one. The outcome of each molt is set by juvenile hormone (JH): high JH keeps the animal in a larval form after molting, declining JH allows molting into the pupa, and when JH is nearly absent the adult emerges.

Why does a school of sardines suddenly turn all at once, moving like a single organism?

The school has no leader; the turn is an emergent, self-organized behavior. Each fish follows three local rules: stay near neighbors, keep a minimum distance, and align with the heading of nearby fish, while its lateral line senses neighbors' water movements, passing information through the group about every 30 milliseconds. When any fish detects danger and turns, the movement spreads as an information wave and the whole school completes a synchronized turn in under a second. This synchrony makes predators face a blurred superorganism and makes it hard to single out any individual.

How do male emperor penguins survive months without food while incubating eggs through the polar night?

After the female lays, she heads back to the sea to feed, leaving the male to incubate. Through the polar night he balances the egg on his feet under a brood pouch, fasting for more than two months on the fat stored during summer and autumn. Thousands huddle together, taking turns at the warm center, sheltering from winds of tens of degrees below zero, and lowering metabolism to save energy. By the time the female returns, the male has often lost nearly half his body weight.

What is the function of the lateral line running along a fish's body?

The lateral line is a sensory organ unique to fish and aquatic amphibians, composed of mechanosensory units called neuromasts arranged along the body. It detects water currents, pressure changes, and low-frequency vibrations, functioning like touch at a distance.

Why is the appearance of the amniotic egg so significant for the evolution of reptiles and birds?

The amniotic egg has a protective shell and extraembryonic membranes: the shell reduces water loss and protects the embryo, the amnion encloses the embryo in amniotic fluid, the yolk sac provides nourishment, and the allantois stores metabolic waste and aids gas exchange. This allows the embryo to develop on dry land, making reptiles the first fully terrestrial vertebrates.

Birds have an elaborate air-sac system in addition to their lungs. What are the key functions of the air sacs?

Air sacs connect to the lungs and create a unidirectional flow of air through the lung, enabling double breathing: gas exchange occurs during both inhalation and exhalation, meeting the high oxygen demand of flight. They also reduce body weight, help dissipate heat during flight, and in some species participate in sound production (e.g., syringeal resonance) and buoyancy control in aquatic birds.

Why can frogs and other amphibians use their skin as an auxiliary respiratory organ?

Amphibian skin is thin and moist, with a dermis rich in capillaries, so oxygen diffuses directly across the skin into the blood and carbon dioxide is released in the opposite direction. During swimming, hibernation, or diving, cutaneous respiration can even become the main route. Because they depend on a moist skin surface, most amphibians live in humid habitats and cannot stay out of water for long.

Why do geese fly in a V formation, and does the leading bird get the worst deal?

The V formation is good aerodynamics. Each bird's wing flaps leave upward-moving vortices behind, and the birds behind ride that lift, saving roughly ten to twenty percent of energy in measured studies. The lead position rotates: a tired leader drops back and another bird takes over, so nobody is permanently disadvantaged. Young and weak birds often sit in the most favorable spots, letting the whole flock fly farther.

They bank oxygen in extraordinarily concentrated skeletal-muscle myoglobin, kept soluble by elevated net surface charge. Comparing dozens of mammals, Mirceta and colleagues found elite divers pack far more myoglobin than land-dwelling relatives, with net charge rising alongside concentration, so like-charged proteins repel instead of aggregating and muscle turns into an oxygen sponge.
