Cacti live in dry deserts, so why do they open their stomata at night to exchange gases?
This is the elegance of CAM photosynthesis. By day the desert is hot, and open stomata would lose huge amounts of water, so cacti close them. On cool nights the stomata open and take in carbon dioxide, which is fixed into malic acid and stored in the vacuole. By day, with stomata shut, the malic acid decarboxylates and releases CO2, feeding the Calvin cycle. Carbon dioxide uptake and use are separated in time, so the plant photosynthesizes with almost no water loss, at the cost of needing more energy to fix the same amount of carbon.

How does methyl salicylate serve as the long-distance mobile signal in systemic acquired resistance (SAR)?
After localized infection, salicylic acid in the diseased leaf is methylated by SAMT into methyl salicylate (MeSA). The lipophilic MeSA moves through the phloem to distant healthy tissue, where the esterase SABP2 hydrolyzes it back to salicylic acid; accumulated SA then acts via receptor NPR1 to induce pathogenesis-related genes and establish a primed state, letting the whole plant mount faster and broader defense upon secondary attack — the core long-distance circuit of plant systemic immunity.

Many seeds germinate better after being swallowed by birds and passed in their droppings. What exactly does the journey through the gut change, and why does it matter for forest regeneration?
Fruit pulp often carries germination inhibitors and keeps seeds in an osmotically stressful environment, while clinging pericarp blocks water uptake. Gut transit strips the pulp and lightly abrades the coat, breaking dormancy; birds also carry seeds away from the parent tree, escaping dense natural enemies and seedling competition near adults (the Janzen–Connell effect). Germination and colonization chances rise together, shaping the spatial pattern of forest regeneration.

Why does cutting a ring of bark off a fruit tree make its fruit bigger?
The phloem inside the bark ships sugar downward: photosynthate moves from leaves through sieve tubes to sinks like the roots. Girdling severs the phloem, so sugar can no longer travel down and piles up in the branches and fruits above the cut, giving fruits extra sugar and making them bigger and sweeter. The water-carrying xylem lies deeper, beyond the cut, so it keeps working and the roots survive on stored reserves; if the cut ring is too wide and fails to heal, the roots are starved and the whole tree may die, which is why growers use only a light or spiral girdle.

What are mycorrhizae, and how do arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi benefit plants?
A mycorrhiza is a mutualistic association between plant roots and fungi; about 90% of land plants form mycorrhizae. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi grow hyphae into cortical cells, forming tree-like arbuscules that vastly expand the absorbing surface, supplying the plant with phosphorus, nitrogen, and water. In return, the plant transfers roughly 20% of its photosynthates (sugars) to the fungus. Mycorrhizae also improve drought and pathogen resistance and play a major role in terrestrial carbon cycling.

How have flowers and their pollinators co-evolved?
Flower structure and pollinators show highly specific co-evolution: insect-pollinated flowers (e.g., orchids) are colorful, scented, or nectar-producing, with petal shapes fitted to particular insects; bee orchids mimic female bees to attract males for pollination. Bird-pollinated flowers tend to be red, scentless, and nectar-rich; wind-pollinated flowers produce abundant pollen, have feathery stigmas, and reduced perianths. These pollination syndromes make pollination more precise and efficient and drove the adaptive radiation of angiosperms.

How does photoperiodism affect plant flowering?

Why are bryophytes such as mosses regarded as a relatively primitive group among land plants?
Bryophytes have multicellular structures, archegonia, and sporangia, but they lack true roots (only rhizoids) and vascular tissue, so they cannot transport water over long distances. Their dominant, photosynthetic generation is the gametophyte, and the sporophyte lives attached to it. Without vascular tissue and with water-dependent fertilization, bryophytes stay small and favor moist, shaded habitats.

How exactly does photosynthesis turn light energy into sugar? What are its two stages?
Photosynthesis happens in the chloroplast in two stages. The light reactions, on the thylakoid membrane, absorb light with photosynthetic pigments, split water and release oxygen, while producing the energy currency ATP and the reducing power NADPH. The dark reactions (Calvin cycle), in the stroma, use that ATP and NADPH to fix carbon dioxide and reduce it into sugar. In short, the light reactions charge the battery and the Calvin cycle builds the product, energy-rich organic matter plus oxygen.

Plants have no eyes or brain, so how do they know roots must grow down and shoots up?
The answer lies in gravity sensing and auxin redistribution. Starch-filled granules (statoliths) in the root tip settle to the bottom of cells, triggering signals that redistribute the hormone auxin to the lower side. Auxin affects the two sides oppositely: in stems a higher concentration promotes elongation, so the lower side grows faster and the stem bends up; in roots a high concentration inhibits elongation, so the lower side lags and the root bends down. This gravity-guided directional growth is gravitropism.

How do plants sense gravity and direct their roots downward?
The root cap contains sedimentable statoliths (starch-filled amyloplasts) that settle to the cell bottom under gravity, triggering an asymmetric distribution of signals such as auxin that slows lower-side growth and speeds the upper side, so roots bend downward. This is positive gravitropism, driving roots into the soil.

What is the function of plant transpiration?
Transpiration is the loss of water vapor from leaf stomata; the resulting pull lifts water and minerals absorbed by roots upward through the plant. It also cools leaves and is a key part of internal transport and the water cycle.

What is "double fertilization," a process unique to flowering plants (angiosperms)?
Double fertilization occurs when the two sperm cells delivered by the pollen tube each fuse with a different cell of the embryo sac: one sperm fertilizes the egg to form a diploid (2n) zygote that develops into the embryo, while the other fuses with the polar nuclei of the central cell to form a triploid (3n) endosperm nucleus, which develops into endosperm nourishing the embryo. It is unique to angiosperms.

In what ways are ferns and other pteridophytes more advanced than bryophytes?
Ferns and allies evolved true roots, stems, leaves, and vascular tissue (xylem and phloem): they were the first vascular plants and can grow tall, with tree ferns reaching over ten meters. Although their sporophyte generation dominates, their flagellated sperm still swim to fertilize eggs, so reproduction depends on water; they therefore favor moist habitats and reproduce by releasing large numbers of spores.

Why do plants bend toward light (phototropism)?
Phototropism mainly results from uneven auxin distribution: after the shoot tip senses light, auxin accumulates on the shaded side, where cells elongate faster, bending the stem toward light. This helps leaves capture more sunlight for photosynthesis.

What does the "naked" in "naked-seed plants" (gymnosperms) refer to?
"Naked" means their ovules and seeds are exposed, not enclosed in an ovary or fruit; the seeds sit directly on the surface of scales (megasporophylls). Gymnosperms reproduce by seeds and no longer depend on water for fertilization: pollen germinates to form a pollen tube that carries the sperm directly to the ovule. Most gymnosperms such as pines are wind-pollinated.

What are the common mechanisms by which seeds are dispersed, and what is their adaptive value?
Seeds are dispersed in many ways: by wind (dandelion pappus, maple samaras), ideal for long-distance spread in open habitats; by animals (birds eating berries and defecating seeds, burrs like cocklebur attaching to fur), giving directed dispersal; by explosive mechanisms (impatiens, squirting cucumber) that fling seeds away; and by water (coconuts) allowing ocean crossing. Dispersal reduces competition with the parent and among siblings and opens new habitats, a key strategy in the success of seed plants.

Plants lack mobile immune cells—how do they sense pathogen attack and mount defense? Distinguish their two major immune responses.
Plants run two tiers of innate immunity. First, membrane pattern-recognition receptors detect conserved microbial molecules such as flagellin fragments and chitin, triggering baseline defense marked by stomatal closure, reactive-oxygen bursts and callose deposition. Second, resistance-gene products recognize pathogen effectors in the gene-for-gene fashion, launching a sharper hypersensitive response and systemic acquired resistance. The constant interplay of recognition and evasion drives the plant-pathogen arms race.

Seeds of many wildflowers such as violets and trilliums carry a small fatty appendage that ants haul off to their nests — why do plants 'hire' ants as couriers?
The appendage is an elaiosome, rich in lipids whose fatty-acid makeup mimics the chemical signature of insect prey, making it irresistible to ants. Workers drag the seed into the nest, eat the elaiosome and discard the intact seed in refuse chambers or abandoned galleries — spots far from the seed predators gathered around the parent plant, nutrient-rich and sheltered underground. The plant trades a scrap of tissue for dispersal distance and a safe germination site; the ants gain a meal.

Why is it especially cool under a big tree in summer? Is transpiration involved?
The coolness under a big tree comes from two stacked effects: the canopy blocks direct sunlight, and transpiration helps too. When water evaporates from leaf stomata it absorbs a lot of latent heat, acting like a built-in air conditioner that chills the leaf and leaves the air beneath moist and cool. The same transpiration pull works like a pump, lifting water from the roots to a crown dozens of meters high.

What substances do xylem and phloem each transport?
Xylem mainly carries water and minerals upward from roots, while phloem distributes sugars and other organic products made by photosynthesis to organs throughout the plant.
