What happens inside a chrysalis while a caterpillar becomes a butterfly?

Inside the chrysalis enzymes dissolve most caterpillar into soup, keeping tiny pockets called imaginal discs; they drink the soup and build wings, legs and compound eyes. Stranger still, some moths remember dangers learned as caterpillars — becoming a butterfly does not erase everything.

How do ants agree to march in lines carrying things together?

Ants leave invisible smell trails! Scouts drip scent as they walk and friends follow the fragrance, forming long lines. It is like drawing arrows only ants can see.

Why is firefly light cold? How does bioluminescence work?

Bulbs glow by heating metal white-hot, wasting ninety percent as heat. Fireflies go chemical: luciferin reacts with oxygen under luciferase enzyme, converting nearly all energy into photons — cold light near perfect efficiency. Different species flash their own rhythm as ID code; males and females must match signals before dates.
