Why does late-night screen time hurt sleep so much — what does blue light actually do?
A class of retinal cells containing melanopsin is exquisitely sensitive to blue light near 480 nm. They do not form images; they wire straight to the suprachiasmatic nucleus and tell the brain it is still daytime. Sustained evening exposure suppresses melatonin and delays the circadian phase, so you feel sleepy later than you should; experiments show evening screen use markedly delays melatonin rise and leaves people groggier next morning. Warm dim light, night modes, or putting the phone away an hour earlier all give the clock its sunset buffer.

Why is jet lag so miserable — is there really a clock inside our bodies?
There really is one. The suprachiasmatic nucleus — roughly twenty thousand neurons in the hypothalamus — acts as the central clock, calibrated daily by light and in turn synchronizing clock genes in the liver, heart and other peripheral organs, so body temperature, hormones and metabolism rise and fall on a 24-hour cycle. After a fast flight across time zones the central clock still keeps the old city's time while tissues resynchronize at different speeds, so sleep, digestion and alertness fall out of phase — hence fatigue and stomach upset. Alignment takes about a day per time zone, and eastward travel adapts more slowly.
