The body seems to have a “clock”—same times for sleep, hunger, alertness. Why does staying up late disrupt it?
The suprachiasmatic nucleus is the master clock, set by light (especially morning) and driving hormones like cortisol and melatonin. Late nights, blue light and irregular meals send wrong signals, desyncing the clock—insomnia, daytime drowsiness.

What causes jet lag after crossing time zones, and what cues reset the body's clock?
The suprachiasmatic nucleus keeps issuing schedules for sleep, body temperature, and hormones according to the old rhythm, and the mismatch with the destination light cycle is felt as jet lag. Resetting relies chiefly on light detected by the retina, relayed via the retinohypothalamic tract to shift the phase of those oscillating neurons. Melatonin timing and meal schedules also contribute, so regular exposure to daylight and meals helps travelers adapt sooner.

Why does bright evening light delay your internal clock while morning light shifts it earlier?
Melanopsin-containing retinal ganglion cells relay light signals to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the master pacemaker that synchronizes peripheral clocks across tissues. The clock answers light with a phase response curve: exposure during the biological evening delays the cycle, while exposure after the body temperature minimum advances it. Clinicians exploit this curve with timed bright-light sessions to correct delayed sleep-wake phase disorder and jet lag.

Why do some flowers open by day and others only at night—can they tell time?
They can! Plants have internal clocks that time flowering to light and temperature so pollinators show up—bees by day, moths by night. Night bloomers like epiphyllum and evening primrose wait for nocturnal insects.
