How does ex-situ differ from in-situ conservation?

In-situ conservation protects species in their natural habitat and ecological context; ex-situ moves them to zoos, botanic gardens or seed banks as a backup—the two complement each other.

Why can a species' functional extinction be more alarming than its total disappearance?

Functional extinction means numbers are too low for a species to play its ecological role (no longer pollinating or preyed upon); even with individuals alive, food webs and functions are already damaged, giving an earlier and crucial warning.

Why does releasing pet turtles or catfish into the wild become a disaster?

Such exotics often lack local predators and are broadly adapted and voracious, outcompeting natives for space and food and disrupting local food webs.

Why are native flowers and grasses better for urban ecology than exotic ornamentals?

Native plants co-evolved with local insects, pollinators and birds, better supporting regional food webs and pollination; exotic ornamentals often fail to provide suitable food or habitat.

What is citizen science, and how can ordinary people help conservation?

Citizen science engages the public in recording species, bird counts and invasive monitoring; the data help scientists track changes and shape conservation.

Why is the giant panda's downlisting from Endangered to Vulnerable seen as a success?

Decades of habitat recovery and captive breeding raised wild numbers and range; but habitat fragmentation and low reproductive rate remain long-term challenges, so downlisting is not a reason to relax.

The crested ibis dropped to just 7 birds worldwide—how did it return to China's skies?

After the last 7 wild ibis were found in Yang County, Shaanxi in 1981, China set up reserves, banned pesticides, bred them in captivity and supplemented feeding, later releasing them. The population has recovered to thousands.

How does conserving biodiversity benefit humans themselves?

Biodiversity underpins ecosystem services like pollination, clean water, soil formation and climate regulation—the foundation of our food, medicine and clean environment.

What is the IUCN Red List for?

The IUCN assesses extinction risk from population trends and threats, ranking species (e.g. Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable) to guide conservation priorities.
