How do closely related species coexist through niche partitioning?
Niche partitioning means coexisting species systematically differ in resource use: spatial partitioning (birds in the same forest feed at different heights, canopy, trunk, ground), temporal partitioning (activity shifted in time of day or season), food partitioning (different seed sizes or prey types), and morphological partitioning (Darwin's finches differ in beak size and shape for different seeds; Caribbean Anolis lizards subdivide habitats by perch height, diameter, and vegetation type). Competitive release and character displacement, greater divergence where species co-occur, provide evolutionary evidence. Reduced competition through such partitioning is the core mechanism explaining highly diverse coexistence such as in tropical rainforests.

What is ecological succession?
Ecological succession is the gradual replacement of communities over time, divided into primary and secondary types. On bare volcanic rock, life begins with lichens and mosses, then grasses and eventually forest, an example of primary succession. Recovery after a forest fire is secondary succession.

What do Gause's Paramecium experiments and the competitive exclusion principle demonstrate?
When Gause cultured Paramecium aurelia and P. caudatum together on a single limited resource, the poorer competitor (P. caudatum) tended to go extinct, though either species alone thrived, leading to the competitive exclusion principle: two species with identical niches cannot coexist indefinitely in the same environment. The Lotka-Volterra competition model shows that coexistence is stable when each species' intraspecific competition exceeds its interspecific effect on the other. In real communities, species reduce competition through niche differentiation (resource partitioning), e.g., barnacles on the shore stratify by tidal level, sustaining diversity.

How does the intermediate disturbance hypothesis explain why moderate disturbance yields the most species?
The hypothesis holds that very frequent disturbance wipes species out and very rare disturbance lets competitive dominants monopolize resources—both lower diversity. Moderate disturbance leaves room for both early- and late-successional species, preventing any single strong competitor from excluding the rest and maximizing diversity.

What is biomagnification?
Whether a substance magnifies depends on its chemistry: pollutants that resist breakdown, dissolve in fat and are hard to excrete (organochlorine pesticides, methylmercury) stay put in an organism's tissues. A consumer eats not just food but everything its prey had stored, and over a lifetime it ingests far more than its own body weight, so concentrations climb rung by rung until top predators carry levels thousands of times above the surrounding water. Set that against energy in a food chain, which drops to roughly a tenth at each step while the pollutant rises at each step. Two confusions to separate: bioaccumulation is one organism enriching against its environment, biomagnification is the rise across trophic levels; and substances that dissolve in water and are readily excreted do not take this route.

How does carbon cycle through the biosphere, and how can the CO2 we exhale end up as wood?
Carbon cycles through photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition and combustion. Plants fix atmospheric CO2 into organic molecules, sugars and cellulose, which form the skeleton of wood and grain; animals eat plants and take carbon into their bodies, then return it to the air as CO2 when they breathe. When organisms die, decomposers mineralize the organic carbon back to CO2. Some carbon gets buried in sediments and, over geological time, becomes coal and oil; burning releases it again. The ocean is also a huge carbon reservoir that absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere, and burning fossil fuels has accelerated the flow, raising atmospheric CO2 levels.

Why is the Arctic food web said to be especially "fragile," and how does sea-ice loss ripple through it?
The Arctic food web is short and steep: ice algae on sea ice are the primary producers, eaten by small crustaceans such as krill, passing up through fish and seals to the top predator, the polar bear. Few links mean each level depends heavily on the one below, so any loss is amplified. The ice edge that forms each spring when sea ice melts is where ice algae bloom and zooplankton gather; as sea ice declines, light and water-column structure change, algal production drops, and the whole chain goes short of food from the bottom up, while polar bears lose their hunting platform, swim farther and lose condition. This bottom-up ripple is a trophic cascade.

Why are lichens commonly used as bioindicators of air quality?
Lichens are symbiotic associations of a fungus with algae or cyanobacteria. Lacking roots and a cuticle, they obtain nearly all their water and nutrients from air and rain, making them extremely sensitive to airborne pollutants, especially SO2 and nitrogen oxides, which damage the algal partner's photosynthesis. Pollutant exposure stunts or kills sensitive species, leaving only tolerant ones. Surveying lichen species composition, cover, and health provides an inexpensive, effective proxy for regional sulfur dioxide and other air pollution.

This is secondary succession. Fire removes the above-ground growth, but the soil still holds seeds, roots and rhizomes, and ash fertilizes the ground while sunlight now reaches it directly. Symbiosis is the long-term living together of two species, divided into mutualism (both benefit, e.g., rhizobia and legumes), commensalism (one benefits, the other unaffected), and parasitism (one benefits at the other's expense). Such relationships strongly shape community structure and species distribution.

Why are tropical forests so species-rich?
Warm, stable, energy-rich and long-climax climates give species more time to diversify, while vertical habitat layering supplies many niches, together raising diversity. Tilman's resource competition and Connell's intermediate-disturbance hypothesis offer mechanistic explanations.

What is biomagnification?
Biomagnification is the process by which hard-to-break-down toxins accumulate and increase in concentration up the food chain. Mercury in water, for example, can reach dangerous levels in large predatory fish. It explains why top predators are most vulnerable to pollution.

Why is protecting biodiversity not simply a matter of "saving the giant panda"?
Biodiversity exists at three levels: genetic, species and ecosystem diversity. Endangered species are just the tip of the iceberg; every species carries a unique gene pool, and ecosystems themselves provide free services, such as pollination, water purification, soil formation, climate regulation and medicines. Protecting keystone species or linking up reserves can safeguard hundreds of species at once, while focusing on a single celebrity species may save one animal but fail to protect the whole ecological network.

Why does energy decrease at every step up a food chain?
Organisms at every trophic level respire, burning a large share of ingested energy into heat just to stay alive; only what goes into growth and reproduction can be eaten by the next level. On average only about ten percent of energy passes from one level to the next, the “10 percent rule.” Because energy dwindles at each step, food chains rarely stretch beyond four or five links, and higher levels require enormous biomass underneath.

How do J-shaped and S-shaped population growth curves differ?
In an ideal environment without resource limits, a population grows exponentially (dN/dt = rN) with a constant growth rate, producing a J-shaped curve that cannot persist long in reality. Limited by food, space, and predators, growth slows as numbers approach the carrying capacity (K), fitting the logistic equation dN/dt = rN(1 - N/K), giving an S-shaped curve that stabilizes around K. Most natural populations show S-shaped dynamics, regulated chiefly by density-dependent factors such as competition, disease, and predation.

How does the natural nitrogen cycle operate?
Atmospheric nitrogen (N₂) is fixed by nitrogen-fixing microbes into ammonia, converted by nitrifying bacteria into nitrates taken up by plants; animals eat plants and pass nitrogen up the food chain, and denitrifying bacteria finally return it to the atmosphere. Heavy human fertilizer use has significantly altered this cycle.

With so much nitrogen in the air, why do plants run short of it, and how do rhizobia help legumes?
About 78 percent of the air is nitrogen, yet most plants cannot use N2 because its triple bond is extremely stable; they depend on nitrate or ammonium from the soil. Rhizobia are among the few microbes that “fix” nitrogen: the enzyme nitrogenase splits N2 and reduces it to ammonia, which the plant uses to build proteins. In return, the legume feeds the bacteria sugars from photosynthesis. This mutualism means legumes barely need nitrogen fertilizer, which is why rotating them into a field enriches the soil.

What is a food chain?
A food chain describes the sequence by which energy and nutrients pass from one organism to the next, usually starting with plants. Herbivores eat plants, and carnivores eat the herbivores. It shows the simple who-eats-whom relationships in nature.

Why are coral reefs called the rainforests of the sea?
Coral reefs cover only a tiny fraction of the ocean but shelter about a quarter of all marine species, making them extraordinarily rich. Like rainforests, they are structurally complex and densely packed with life. Yet reefs are very sensitive to warming and easily bleach and die.

Why are bees important to plants?
As bees gather nectar, they carry pollen from one flower to another, helping plants pollinate and produce fruit and seeds. Many crops depend on bees and other insects for pollination to yield a harvest. Declining bee numbers threaten food security.

What do producers, consumers, and decomposers each do in nature?
Producers like green plants make food from sunlight, consumers like animals eat plants or other animals for energy, and decomposers like mushrooms and bacteria break dead plants and animals back into nutrients for the soil. Working together, they keep nature's materials cycling.

What role do food chains and food webs play in ecosystems?
A food chain describes a linear “who eats whom” transfer of energy, while a food web interlinks many chains to reflect the complex feeding relationships among species. They show how energy flows from producers through consumers and how the loss of one species can ripple through the system.
