When did early humans begin making stone tools and using fire?
The oldest known stone tools come from Lomekwi 3 in Kenya (about 3.3 million years old, predating Homo habilis, belonging to a distinct pre-Oldowan industry); the classic Oldowan industry appeared in East Africa about 2.6-1.7 million years ago and is usually linked to habilines. More refined Acheulean handaxes appeared around 1.76 million years ago, generally attributed to Homo erectus. The earliest evidence of fire use is about 1 million years old (burnt bones and ash at Wonderwerk Cave, South Africa), with systematic, habitual fire use around 400 thousand years ago (multiple European sites). Fire provided warmth, protection, and cooking; cooking raises the energy density of food and shortens digestion, and is considered a key driver of brain expansion and sociality.

What do ancient DNA studies reveal about the relationship between modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans?
In 2010, Svante Pääbo's team published the Neanderthal genome draft (awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine), showing that non-African modern humans carry about 1-2% Neanderthal DNA, proof that modern humans leaving Africa interbred with Neanderthals. The Denisovan genome, sequenced in 2010 from a finger bone at Denisova Cave in Siberia, survives mainly in Southeast Asian and Oceanian populations (up to about 5% in Papua New Guineans). These introgressed segments affect modern immunity (e.g., HLA and TLR genes) and phenotypes such as high-altitude adaptation. Notably, Neanderthal mtDNA and Y chromosomes are essentially absent in modern humans, suggesting interbreeding was mainly between Neanderthal males and sapiens females, or that such lineages were selected against.

How do biologists define a "species," and why did Darwin's finches on the Galapagos Islands evolve into so many different species?
The most common definition, the biological species concept, treats a species as the largest group whose members can interbreed and produce fertile offspring under natural conditions. The finches illustrate allopatric speciation: islands separated by ocean cut off gene flow between populations, so each island's birds accumulated different mutations and faced different selective pressures because food differed, from seeds and cactus to insects and even blood. Over long isolation, differences in beak shape and feeding grew until, even when they met, they could no longer interbreed smoothly, and reproductive isolation made new species.

A molecular clock uses the roughly constant rate at which neutral mutations accumulate in DNA or proteins; by comparing genetic differences between two groups, it estimates when they split. Calibrating the rate with fossils of known age lets researchers build timed trees even for groups lacking fossils.

Where did humans come from, and is it scientifically accurate to say “people evolved from monkeys”?
Strictly speaking, humans did not evolve from today's monkeys or apes; our lineage split from that of chimpanzees about six to eight million years ago, sharing a long-extinct common ancestor. The hominin fossil chain includes the bipedal Australopithecus of about four million years ago (the famous “Lucy”), Homo habilis and Homo erectus around two million years ago, and later Homo sapiens. Brain size grew and tools and fire appeared ever earlier; Homo sapiens, emerging about 300,000 years ago, became the direct ancestor of modern humans, a story confirmed by fossils, molecular clocks and ancient DNA.

How does punctuated equilibrium explain the "sudden appearances" of species in the fossil record?
Punctuated equilibrium holds that species stay morphologically stable (stasis) for long spans, then undergo rapid speciation and change in relatively short bursts, rather than changing at a constant slow pace. It emphasizes speciation events over gradual individual change and helps explain the "sudden appearances" common in fossils.

Brain volume rose from about 400-500 ml in australopiths to about 600-700 ml in Homo habilis, about 900-1100 ml in Homo erectus, and about 1300-1500 ml in Homo sapiens, nearly tripling over about two million years, with a sharp increase in erectus. The expansion accompanied changes in skull shape, forehead, and cerebellum and is linked to tool making, language, complex social behavior, and better nutrition from cooking. Notably, brain size has slightly declined over the past 10,000-20,000 years; whether due to smaller bodies, skull shape, or neural-wiring optimization is still debated.

Is the giraffe's long neck a result of “use and disuse” (Lamarck) or of natural selection (Darwin)?
Lamarck proposed that giraffes stretched their necks until offspring inherited the gain, a “use and disuse” mechanism with inheritance of acquired traits that modern genetics rejects. Darwin's explanation is that neck length already varied within the group: individuals with longer necks reached higher leaves, survived and reproduced better, so long-neck genes spread across generations. The key point is that variation exists before selection acts; necks do not grow because of stretching.

What does the "Out of Africa" hypothesis state?
The "Out of Africa" hypothesis holds that modern humans (Homo sapiens) originated in Africa about 300-200 thousand years ago, then migrated out of Africa via the Middle East around 60-70 thousand years ago (some archaeological evidence suggests as early as about 100 thousand years ago), spreading across Eurasia, Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Americas, largely replacing local archaic humans (Neanderthals, Denisovans) while exchanging limited genes with them. Supporting evidence includes the highest mtDNA and Y-chromosome diversity in African populations, lower diversity outside Africa consistent with a serial founder effect, and a relatively recent common ancestor shared by all non-Africans.

Why did the peacock's long tail evolve (sexual selection)?
Females prefer showier trains, so males with extravagant tails win mates despite the survival cost—sexual selection. Darwin proposed this in 'The Descent of Man' (1871); Fisher explained the self-reinforcing preference with his runaway model in 1930.

How do new species form?
Speciation usually begins with reproductive isolation between populations: geographic separation lets two groups accumulate differences independently, and once they can no longer mate or produce fertile offspring even if they meet, they are separate species. Isolation can arise from geographic, behavioral, temporal, or chromosomal factors.

What is the difference between allopatric and sympatric speciation?
Allopatric speciation occurs when a geographic barrier such as a mountain or ocean splits a population so the parts evolve apart and accumulate reproductive isolation; sympatric speciation produces new species within the same area without a barrier, often via ecological niche divergence or chromosomal change. Both ultimately yield reproductive isolation.

How do fossils form, and why can they prove that life has gradually evolved?
After an organism dies, rapid burial in sediment protects it from air; over time minerals in groundwater slowly replace its bones or shells, and oxygen-free conditions can even preserve soft tissue. When fossils from different geological periods are arranged in time order, they reveal a chain of change from simple to complex forms and from transitional to specialized ones, for example the horse's fifty-million-year series from a fox-sized, many-toed ancestor to the single-hoofed animal we know.

How do we know that whales evolved from land-dwelling animals?
The evidence comes from fossils and body structure. Paleontologists found fossils such as Pakicetus and Ambulocetus, animals from over 50 million years ago that had walking legs yet already showed whale-like skulls and ears. Living whales still carry useless hind-limb remnants, non-functional hair follicles, and mammal-style lung breathing and nursing. Molecular evidence further shows that whales' closest living relatives are hippos.

Why does an insecticide kill almost every insect at first, yet years later large numbers of resistant "super pests" appear?
Resistance is not a new trait the pesticide forces into being; it is natural selection amplifying variation that was already there. In any population a tiny number of individuals happen to carry resistance mutations. When spraying kills the rest, those survivors reproduce, so resistant individuals make up a bigger share with every generation. The more often and incompletely the pesticide is used, the faster the resistant population appears, natural selection demonstrated in real time.

What does evolution mean for living things?
Evolution means living things change slowly over time so that descendants differ from their ancestors and fit their world better. Giraffes, for example, got long necks because ancestors with slightly longer necks reached more leaves and passed that trait down through generations.

How does Darwin's "natural selection" drive evolution?
Natural selection means individuals with advantageous variations survive and reproduce more successfully, so beneficial traits accumulate in the population over generations. Proposed in "On the Origin of Species" (1859), it is the central mechanism of evolution.

How are living things classified?
Scientists group organisms into ranks like kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species by relatedness. Species is the basic unit, meaning a natural group that can interbreed. Modern classification also uses DNA to refine these relationships.

What is the difference between homologous and analogous organs?
Homologous organs share a common ancestor with similar structure but possibly different function (human arm vs whale flipper), while analogous organs perform similar functions but evolved independently with different origins (bird wing vs bee wing).

What is evolution?
Evolution is the gradual change of species over time, which can give rise to new species. Mainly through mechanisms like natural selection, traits that help survival become more common in later generations. All living things on Earth can trace back to common ancestors.
