Among fungi, animals, and plants, which pair is more closely related?

Genetic analysis shows fungi are more closely related to animals than to plants; both sit in the opisthokont branch and split over a billion years ago, while plants diverged earlier. So in the tree of life a mushroom is evolutionarily 'more like an animal' than a tree is.

Why might the largest 'organism' in a forest be a single fungus?

A honey fungus in the US connects through underground hyphae across about 9.6 square kilometers, estimated thousands of years old, among the largest single organisms on Earth. It expands via mycelial networks, decomposing wood and quietly dominating the woodland.

The prized “winter worm summer grass” (cordyceps)—is it worm or plant, and how does it form?

It's neither worm nor plant but a fungus: a caterpillar infected by cordyceps spores is consumed from inside by fungal threads, then in spring a club-shaped fruiting body sprouts from its head—looking like a “worm that grew grass”.

How diverse is the kingdom Fungi, and how many species are known?

About 100,000-plus fungal species have been described, yet estimates suggest over two million may exist, mostly undiscovered. They include yeasts, molds, macrofungi, and chytrids of aquatic habitats. Fungi play irreplaceable roles in nutrient cycling and symbiotic networks.

Can some slime molds 'count' and divide labor; is that real?

When food runs out, cellular slime molds aggregate into a multicellular 'slug' in which some cells sacrifice themselves as a supporting stalk while others become spore capsules, trading a few for reproductive success. They make division-of-labor 'decisions' based on group size and self-recognition, but via chemical control, not real awareness.

Why are some mushrooms poisonous yet look so much like edible ones?

Mushroom toxins evolved mainly to defend against grazers; looking like edible species is usually convergence, not 'disguise as tasty.' Deadly Amanita differs only subtly from edible kinds, and judging by color or insect bites is unreliable. Safest is to eat only clearly identified species.

Are lingzhi, wood ear, and mushrooms all one family?

They all belong to the kingdom Fungi but differ in closeness: lingzhi and mushrooms are mostly Basidiomycota, wood ear is also basidiomycete but a different class with very different form. The common trait is no chlorophyll and feeding via hyphae. The everyday word 'mushroom' spans broad taxonomic distances.

Slime molds have no brain; how do they 'solve' a maze?

Physarum polycephalum is a single-celled, multi-nucleus slime mold that extends pseudopods to explore, forming the most efficient channels between food and abandoning dead ends, appearing to plan intelligently. It is essentially simple chemotaxis and resource optimization, yet shows distributed-computing-like ability.

What is a mycorrhiza, and why can't forests do without it?

A mycorrhiza is a symbiosis of fine plant roots with fungus: the fungus supplies phosphorus, nitrogen, and water, and the tree shares photosynthetic sugars. Most land plants depend on it for nutrients, especially in poor soils. Cutting the underground hyphal web badly hurts seedling survival.

Where was penicillin discovered from?

Penicillin came from the observation that a Penicillium mold contaminating a dish inhibited surrounding bacteria; Fleming noticed this in 1928. Scientists later purified it into an antibiotic, launching modern antibacterial therapy. It is essentially a fungus's chemical weapon.

Why does yeast make dough rise?

Yeast in warm, moist dough breaks down sugars into carbon dioxide and alcohol. The gas is trapped by the gluten network as tiny bubbles, making the dough expand and soften. Baking evaporates the alcohol and sets the pores, yielding fluffy bread.

What are the green fuzz on moldy bread?

Those are the hyphae and spores of mold, commonly Penicillium or Aspergillus. In warmth and damp they grow fast, breaking down the bread's nutrients and sprouting fuzzy spore-bearing threads to disperse. Some molds make harmful toxins, so moldy food is best discarded entirely.

Why do moldy patches like patterns grow in damp corners?

Damp walls supply water and organic dust for spores to germinate into radially spreading hyphae, forming ringed or feathery patches. Colors vary by species—black, green, white. Keeping dry and ventilated is the best prevention.

Is a mushroom a plant? What does it grow from?

A mushroom is not a plant but a fungus. What we see is just its 'fruit' (the fruiting body); underground lies a web of thread-like hyphae. Fungi lack chlorophyll and feed by secreting enzymes to break down dead wood and leaves, making them key decomposers.
