Why do ants always march in single file, and how do they find their way back home?
Many ant species lay pheromone trails as they walk; nestmates follow this chemical path between nest and food, and the more ants use it, the stronger the trail and the straighter the column. They also navigate by the sun's position and count steps to gauge distance. When rain washes the trail away or other odors mask it, the orderly line collapses.

Insects excrete via Malpighian tubules; why does this system let them survive extremely arid environments?
Malpighian tubules pass nitrogenous waste into the hindgut mainly as uric acid, which is poorly soluble, minimally toxic, and carries away almost no water. Rectal pads in the hindgut then actively reclaim ions and water, leaving the final feces nearly dry. Combined with a water-proof cuticle and fine control of spiracle opening, insects push water loss down to among the lowest of any land animal, a key adaptation behind their conquest of terrestrial habitats.

With no commander in charge, how do thousands of ants coordinate to build intricately structured nests?
Ant colonies rely on a self-organizing mechanism called stigmergy: each worker obeys purely local rules, such as moving along pheromone gradients and dropping excavated soil where encounters with nestmates are most frequent. Traces left by individuals steer the behavior of others, forming self-amplifying positive-feedback loops. Out of many simple rules emerges a nest with effective ventilation and stable temperature and humidity, even though no single ant ever holds the overall blueprint.
