What is CRISPR, and why do bacteria keep it?

CRISPR is a bacterial 'immune memory' against viruses: cells store snippets of invading viral DNA in their own genome and, on reencounter, use Cas proteins to recognize and cut the viral DNA by matching those snippets. Humans later turned it into a precise gene-editing tool. It is essentially the product of a long bacterial-virus arms race.

What is the debate over whether viruses count as alive?

Viruses carry genetic information and evolve, yet cannot metabolize independently and must replicate inside hosts, sitting on the boundary of life. Supporters call them 'parasitic genetic entities'; opponents stress the lack of cells and metabolism disqualifies them. The debate shapes origin-of-life and classification research.

What is 'microbial dark matter', and why does it matter?

Microbial dark matter refers to abundant environmental microbes we cannot culture in labs or easily classify, found mainly via metagenomic sequencing. They may occupy many unknown branches of the tree of life and drive carbon and nitrogen cycles while their functions stay mysterious. Unraveling them helps explain Earth's biochemistry and new drug sources.

What are methanogenic archaea, and what makes them distinctive?

Methanogenic archaea in oxygen-free settings (wetlands, ruminant stomachs, landfills) produce methane from CO2, H2, or acetate, making them Earth's main biological methane source. They rely on unique coenzyme F420 and methyl-coenzyme M reductase, a metabolism that clearly sets them apart from bacteria.

What is horizontal gene transfer, and why does it make bacteria dangerous?

Horizontal gene transfer is the direct exchange of genes between bacteria without reproduction, such as passing drug-resistance genes on plasmids. It lets antibiotic resistance spread quickly across species, producing 'superbugs.' It is a major reason microbes evolve faster than multicellular organisms.

Why do antibiotics 'stop working' when overused?

Bacteria reproduce fast; individuals with random resistance mutations survive drug pressure and spread, while horizontal gene transfer passes resistance around, producing many resistant strains. Overuse and unfinished courses accelerate this, so antibiotics need careful, full, doctor-guided use.

What are extremophiles, and why can they survive boiling acid or ice?

Extremophiles thrive where most life cannot—deep-sea vents, salt lakes, strong acid—using special membrane lipids, heat-stable proteins, and compatible solutes to protect their structures. For example, heat-loving bacteria have enzymes stable near boiling and are now used in PCR and other biotechnologies.

Are the 'probiotics' in yogurt the same as yogurt bacteria?

Regular yogurt is fermented by Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, which mostly die in stomach acid and may not colonize the gut. Marketed 'probiotics' often mean strains like Bifidobacterium that survive acid and may benefit the gut. Both are lactic-acid bacteria but with different roles.

Why should we use soap rather than just water to wash hands?

Many germs are coated in a greasy layer that plain water cannot remove. Soap molecules have a water-loving end and an oil-loving end, so they wrap the grease and the attached germs into tiny clusters that rinse away. Scrubbing for at least twenty seconds makes it effective.

What is nitrification, and what does it have to do with changing fish-tank water?

Fish waste in a tank turns into toxic ammonia; nitrifying bacteria oxidize it first to nitrite then to less toxic nitrate—nitrification. A mature filter relies on this bacterial film to clean water, so a new tank must 'cycle' to build the colony, and you should neither skip water changes nor swap too much at once.

How are yogurt and kimchi made with the help of bacteria?

Lactic acid bacteria ferment sugars in milk or vegetables into lactic acid, acidifying the environment and suppressing spoilage microbes. Yogurt relies on species like Lactobacillus bulgaricus to thicken and sour milk, while kimchi uses mixed lactic bacteria to flavor and preserve vegetables. Such fermentation is among humanity's oldest food-preservation methods.

Why is pus at a wound a sign the body is 'fighting'?

Pus is the debris of a battle between immune cells and invading bacteria: dead white cells, bacteria, and tissue fluid mix into yellowish matter. It signals the body is fighting infection, but if redness, swelling, pain, or fever worsen, you should see a doctor.

How do the tiny bacteria in our gut help digest food?

Countless bacteria live in our gut and break down dietary fiber that human enzymes cannot digest, fermenting it into short-chain fatty acids that feed colon cells and help regulate immunity. Without these "tenants," much of our nutrition and resistance would suffer.

Why do iodine or alcohol kill bacteria on a wound?

Iodine and alcohol denature bacterial proteins and enzymes, inactivating microbes as broad-spectrum disinfectants. They also irritate human cells, so use only on skin surface, not deep wounds. They suffice for cleaning minor cuts.

Why does milk go sour and spoil if left too long?

Milk is nutritious, so airborne lactic bacteria and others make lactic acid, curdling proteins and souring the taste—natural fermentation. If pathogens contaminate it, it can also rot and smell foul. Refrigeration slows but cannot stop microbes forever.

Which is smaller, bacteria or viruses, and how do they differ?

Viruses are usually far smaller than bacteria. Bacteria are complete single-celled organisms that metabolize and reproduce on their own, while viruses have no cell structure and must enter a host cell to replicate. Antibiotics kill bacteria but generally do nothing against viruses, so they are little help for most colds.
