Why do some plants eat insects?
What these plants lack is mineral nutrients, not energy. In acidic peat bogs nitrogen and phosphorus are scarce and roots are too weak to cover the shortfall, so leaves are modified into traps: nectar and trigger hairs lure an insect in and hold it there, glands digest the body outside the plant with enzymes such as proteases, and the products are absorbed as amino acids, ammonium and phosphate to build proteins and nucleic acids. A caught insect is a top-up of slow-release fertilizer, while the energy still comes from photosynthesis. The boundary is cost: trap leaves offer little photosynthetic area and are dear to build and maintain, so the strategy pays only where light is plentiful and soil is poor.

Why do mimosa leaves fold and droop the moment they are touched? Is this the same as a nervous reflex?
Mimosa's movement is seismonasty, similar in spirit to a reflex but built differently. Touch triggers electrical and chemical signals in the pulvini, the swollen motor cells at the leaf bases; potassium and water rush out of the cells, turgor pressure collapses, the cells soften and the leaflets fold and droop. Over minutes to tens of minutes water returns and the leaves reopen. Plants have no neurons; they use a home-grown rapid response system based on turgor and electrical signals, yet can conduct the signal at several centimeters per second.

Why must winter wheat be sown in autumn? What exactly is vernalization?
Winter wheat needs a long enough spell of winter cold to flower normally the following spring, and this is vernalization. Cold is the plant's seasonal calendar: prolonged chilling silences flowering-suppressor genes such as FLC, and epigenetic marks lock in the silenced state, lifting the block on floral genes. Longer days after warm-up then promote flowering; if winter is too mild, the plant acts as if winter never came and may fail to head all spring, cutting yields sharply.

Where do trees deliver water and nutrients? What do xylem and phloem each do?
Xylem and phloem form the plant's dual transport system. Xylem is made of dead cells joined into hollow pipes; transpiration pull keeps a constant stream of water and minerals flowing up from the roots to the leaves. Phloem consists of living cells that carry sugars made in photosynthesis to fruits, seeds and roots, usually downward but able to move either way. In one line: xylem ships water up, phloem delivers food everywhere.

When fungi wrap around tree roots, are they stealing nutrients or helping?
In most cases it is a mutually beneficial symbiosis. Mycorrhizal hyphae are far thinner than root hairs, so they reach into tiny soil pores and supply water and, crucially, phosphate ions that diffuse poorly, receiving sugars from photosynthesis in return. Over 90 percent of vascular plants form this alliance; without these underground partners, many forest trees could hardly grow.

Why can some seeds still germinate after lying in the ground for years?
This is seed dormancy. It can come from a hard, water-impermeable coat, from inhibitors inside the seed such as abscisic acid, or from a need for cold or light before germination is unlocked. Desert seeds can wait through long droughts and germinate quickly after one rain to seize the wet window. Dormancy spreads the risk of germination across years, a kind of insurance that boosts survival.
