Why does the Finnish population carry an unusually high burden of recessive disorders that are rare elsewhere, and what role did the founder effect play?

Finland was founded roughly two millennia ago by a small band of settlers from the southwestern coast; epidemics, famines and wars later squeezed the population through repeated bottlenecks, and marriage stayed largely local. Random drift amplified a few rare alleles carried by these founders, so more than thirty recessive disorders are unusually common (e.g., Finnish-type congenital nephrotic syndrome), while cystic fibrosis and phenylketonuria stay rare. Shared ancestral haplotypes also greatly eased positional cloning of the culprit genes.

What is genetic drift, and why does it act especially strongly in small populations?

Genetic drift is the random fluctuation of allele frequencies across generations caused by sampling chance in finite populations. When few individuals breed each generation, sampling error grows: heterozygosity declines by about 1/(2Ne) per generation, and alleles are readily fixed or lost at random. In Buri's classic bw experiment with Drosophila, allele-frequency variance among dozens of replicate small lines widened every generation until many were completely fixed, showing that drift strengthens sharply as effective population size falls.

Florida panthers, long isolated, developed kinked tails, heart defects and other problems; after closely related cougars from Texas were introduced in 1995, the population rebounded. What role did gene flow play?

Small, isolated populations easily become inbred, and homozygosity for harmful recessive variants produces kinked tails, cryptorchidism and heart defects. In 1995 managers released eight female Texas cougars, adding fresh alleles: hybrid offspring carried higher heterozygosity, defect rates dropped sharply, kitten survival improved, and numbers climbed from roughly thirty to well over a hundred. This genetic rescue shows that modest gene flow rapidly restores fitness and is now a key conservation tool.
