How was the bacterial antiviral CRISPR system turned into a gene-editing tool?

How was the synthetic minimal bacterial genome JCVI-syn3.0 'written,' and why does it retain over a hundred genes of unknown function?
Starting from Mycoplasma mycoides, the team first used whole-genome transposon mutagenesis to classify every gene as essential or dispensable for growth, then chemically synthesized and assembled progressively reduced genomes through iterative design-build-test cycles, arriving at JCVI-syn3.0 with about 531 kilobase pairs and only 473 genes. One hundred forty-nine genes stayed despite unknown functions because removing any halted cell proliferation—evidence that life's core network still hides unannotated essential components—and this stripped-down chassis became a platform for installing custom functions on demand.
