Qingtian's rice–fish system is a heritage farm—what's smart about this ancient wisdom?

Raising fish in paddies lets fish eat pests and weeds while their droppings fertilize; rice shades and oxygenates water, fish loosen soil and remove harm—one field, two harvests. A model of circular farming, listed by FAO as agricultural heritage.

Many herbs must be “processed”—fried, steamed, calcined, wine-soaked. Were ancients changing chemistry?

Yes. Processing with heat, water, or adjuvants lowers toxicity (e.g. prepared aconite), shifts properties, aids storage or boosts extraction of active compounds. It was empirical chemistry—tuning efficacy and safety by practice long before molecular science.

The Compendium of Materia Medica lists thousands of plants and animals as medicine—without labs, how did ancients know what worked?

Ancients built knowledge by long observation, trial and error, and oral tradition—watching sick animals self-medicate, noting folk “like cures like”, testing on themselves. Some (artemisinin for malaria, ephedra for asthma) are validated; many lack evidence and shouldn't be trusted blindly.

Traditional rice fields raise fish and ducks alongside—why fewer pests and less fertilizer than rice alone?

Ducks eat pests and weeds and stir the mud; fish consume mosquito larvae and debris; their droppings fertilize naturally. The rice–fish–duck loop cuts pesticides and fertilizer while raising yield and quality.

Dai “holy hills” and Tibetan “sacred mountains” forbid felling—can such traditional beliefs really protect biodiversity?

Yes. Treating hills or mountains as sacred and banning cutting or hunting acts like a cultural “reserve”, preserving native vegetation and wildlife. Many such beliefs were humanity's earliest in-situ conservation, matching modern ideas.

At Dragon Boat Festival people hang mugwort and calamus to “repel insects and evil”—is there science in it?

Mugwort and calamus release volatile oils (eucalyptol, flavonoids) that repel mosquitoes and inhibit some bacteria. In the muggy early summer this genuinely deters pests; “warding off evil” was the ancient way of saying disease prevention.

Ancients planted by signs like “rivers thaw at 7×9 days, geese return at 8×9”—that's phenology. What is it?

Phenology is the timing of biological events with the seasons—flowering, bird migration, insect song. Ancients matched nature's “schedule” to farming, creating a natural calendar for sowing and harvest without instruments.
