Why are cone snail toxins described as a treasure trove for drug development? Answer in terms of conotoxin structure and target specificity.
Cone snail venom holds dozens to over a hundred small peptides. Each conotoxin is tiny, densely cross-linked by disulfide bridges and conformationally rigid, letting it bind one particular ion-channel or receptor subtype with very high affinity: omega-conotoxin MVIIA, for instance, selectively blocks N-type calcium channels. Such precision makes them valuable molecular probes and ideal drug leads; the painkiller ziconotide, derived from Conus magus venom, was approved in 2004.

How did viper venom give rise to a landmark antihypertensive? Using the bradykinin-potentiating peptides from the venom of Bothrops jararaca as an example, explain how captopril was developed as the first oral angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and describe its mechanism of lowering blood pressure.
Bradykinin-potentiating peptides in Bothrops jararaca venom inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme, prolonging the action of the vasodilator bradykinin. Building on this, Cushman and Ondetti at Squibb designed captopril, approved in 1981 as the first oral ACE inhibitor: it blocks the conversion of angiotensin I into strongly vasoconstricting angiotensin II and reduces aldosterone release, lowering blood pressure. Venoms evolve highly selective enzyme inhibitors to subdue prey; these often fit homologous human regulatory pathways, making them ideal drug leads.

After a bite from elapid snakes like the many-banded krait, why do victims suffer flaccid paralysis and even respiratory failure?
Elapid venoms are rich in three-finger alpha-neurotoxins such as alpha-bungarotoxin. With very high affinity these occupy the acetylcholine site of nicotinic receptors at the neuromuscular junction without opening the ion channel, so motor excitation never reaches the muscle and flaccid paralysis sets in; paralysis of the diaphragm causes respiratory failure. Many elapids also carry presynaptic beta-toxins of the phospholipase A2 family that damage nerve terminals and block transmitter release, attacking both sides of the synapse.
