Why is SO3 absorbed in concentrated sulfuric acid rather than water in the contact process?

Absorbing SO3 in water releases huge heat and forms acid mist that is hard to capture. Using ~98% H2SO4 avoids misting and gives near-complete absorption before dilution.

Why does soap feel slippery?

Soap is basic and reacts with the oil on skin, which makes it feel slippery. Its base also breaks grease into tiny drops that water can wash away, which is how soap cleans.

Why does baking soda taste bitter and not sweet?

Baking soda is basic, and the tongue senses base as bitter or soapy, so it is used for baking rather than as a sweetener. With acid it bubbles, which is exactly how it makes cakes fluffy.

Why does an antacid tablet make a tummy feel better?

The stomach is too acidic; the antacid is basic and cancels the acid, so it feels better. Common antacids contain bases like calcium carbonate that soak up extra stomach acid.

The acid in lemon juice reacts with the dark layer, tarnish, on copper and removes it, showing shiny metal. That tarnish is mostly copper oxide or sulfide, which dissolves in acid, so lemon polishes it clean.

Why do we add a little baking soda when making steamed buns?

Baking soda releases carbon dioxide with heat and the dough's acid, making tiny holes so buns turn soft. A little alkali also removes the sour taste, leaving the bun fluffy and not acidic.
