Why is blood red?
Blood is red because of heme: an iron(II) ion sits in the flat centre held by the four pyrrole nitrogens of the porphyrin, and this conjugated system absorbs strongly from the blue-violet into the blue-green, so the blue is taken out and what comes through is red. Adding oxygen to the iron changes its ligand field and the electronic structure of the porphyrin, which is why oxygenated blood is bright red and oxygen-poor blood dark red; that is the difference between arterial and venous colour. That veins "look blue" is an illusion - the blood has only darkened, and the bluish cast comes from light filtering through skin; plasma itself is nearly pale yellow.

Why does caffeine keep you awake?
Adenosine is a signal that piles up in the brain through the waking hours, and once it sits on an adenosine receptor it damps the arousal neurons and pushes you toward sleep. Caffeine is a methylxanthine like adenosine and close enough in shape to take the seat on the receptor first without switching it on, shutting adenosine out so the drowsiness signal never lands. It is an antagonist, not a fuel: it does not reduce the adenosine, it only keeps the receptor from receiving it. That occupation is reversible, so the adenosine that has built up lands as soon as the caffeine is metabolized and the sleepiness crashes in; with regular intake the number of receptors is also upregulated, which is where tolerance and the headache after stopping come from.

Why is ATP called energy currency?
The negative charges on ATP's triphosphate tail repel one another; hydrolyzing it to ADP and phosphate relieves that repulsion and leaves the products better solvated, so free energy drops, and that drop is what a cell spends. It is a currency because it neither stores energy nor does work, sitting in the middle instead: energy from oxidizing fuel re-phosphorylates ADP, and ATP hands a phosphate group onward to drive transport, motion and synthesis. Breaking any bond only absorbs heat, so "the high-energy bond releases energy" is shorthand for more stable products, and ATP is no reserve—it covers seconds of hard work.

What is the chemical basis of firefly luminescence?
Firefly light comes from chemiluminescence: the enzyme luciferase catalyzes luciferin reacting with oxygen to form excited oxyluciferin, which emits yellow-green light around 550-580 nanometers as it returns to the ground state.
Denaturation is the disruption of a protein's 3D structure (secondary and above) by heat, acid, alcohol, or agitation, losing biological activity while the primary peptide chain usually stays intact. Boiling an egg, where clear albumin turns white and solid, is denaturation.
