Why does the blue of blue-and-white porcelain come from an ore?
Blue-and-white uses cobalt-bearing ore (e.g. imported Sumali cobalt) painted under a clear glaze; cobalt ions give a stable blue after high-temperature firing, with hue varying by source.

Why do white clothes and paper turn yellow with age?
Lignin and similar components in paper and cotton slowly oxidize into yellow compounds under light and oxygen, and bleach residues can catalyze it.

Why are the blues and greens of butterfly wings and peacock feathers not from pigment?
The blues and greens of butterfly wings and peacock feathers come from structural color: nanoscale periodic structures (multilayers, gratings) interfere with or diffract light to selectively reflect particular wavelengths, instead of pigments absorbing others. The color therefore shifts with viewing angle, does not fade like a dye, and often has a metallic sheen. Grind the structure apart and the color disappears—proof it is physical, not chemical.

Why is the sky blue?

Why are leaves green?

Why do live grayish shrimp turn red when cooked?
Astaxanthin in shellfish is bound to protein (grayish); heating denatures the protein, freeing red astaxanthin, so cooked shrimp turn red.

Why do fireworks have different colors?
Different metal salts emit characteristic colors when hot: heat excites the metal atoms' electrons, which then fall back to lower levels and emit light of specific wavelengths — for example, sodium glows yellow, strontium red, barium green, and copper blue.

Why does fabric keep its dye color even after washing?

Why do red yellow and blue paints mix into muddy dark colors?
Paint mixing is subtraction: red paint reflects only red light and swallows the rest; mix more pigments and more light gets eaten until nearly none reflects — muddy dark. Stage lights play addition: red green blue beams combine into white. Paint subtracts; light adds.
