What is the standard electrode potential?

The standard electrode potential is the potential difference of a half-reaction relative to the standard hydrogen electrode under standard conditions (25 C, 1 atm or bar, unit activity), measured in volts. The more positive it is, the more easily the oxidized form gains electrons and the stronger its oxidizing power. It is used to judge the spontaneity of redox reactions and compute cell voltage.

What is the electric double layer?

When a metal is immersed in an electrolyte, its surface gains charge by ion dissolution or adsorption, and an equal opposite-charged ion layer forms on the solution side, creating an interfacial structure of a compact and a diffuse layer called the electric double layer. Its potential difference is the microscopic origin of electrode potential and the basis of capacitance and corrosion.

What is a concentration cell?

A concentration cell is a galvanic cell made of two identical electrodes but half-cells with different electrolyte concentrations; its voltage comes from the concentration difference rather than different electrode materials. Reduction occurs on the more concentrated side and oxidation on the dilute side until concentrations equalize. It illustrates electricity generated by diffusion driving force.

How does electroplating make metal grow evenly onto a workpiece, and where does the coating come from?

Electroplating is electrolysis: the workpiece (say iron) is the cathode, the coating metal (copper or nickel) is the anode, and both sit in an electrolyte containing that metal's ions. On current flow the anode dissolves (M - ne⁻ → Mⁿ⁺), replenishing the ions the solution uses up, while at the cathode Mⁿ⁺ gains electrons and is reduced to metal atoms that deposit layer by layer on the workpiece. Controlling current density, temperature and additives yields fine grains, strong adhesion and uniform thickness. Besides looks, the coat shields the base metal from corrosion.

Why must lithium batteries not be overcharged?

Overcharging destroys the positive electrode structure and causes metallic lithium to plate as dendrites on the negative electrode, which can pierce the separator and short the cell internally, even triggering thermal runaway and fire. It also accelerates electrolyte decomposition and harms cycle life. A battery management system must therefore cap the charging voltage.

Why does aluminum, though more reactive than iron, resist ongoing corrosion while iron rust keeps penetrating?

Aluminum has a more negative standard potential than iron and is thermodynamically easier to oxidize, but the Al₂O₃ film it forms is dense and adheres tightly, instantly sealing off oxygen and water so corrosion self-passivates. Rust (Fe₂O₃·xH₂O) is porous and flakes off, leaving the underlying metal exposed to continued attack.

A zinc plate and a copper plate are dipped in dilute sulfuric acid and connected by a wire. Why does current flow in the wire?

Because the two metals differ in activity, they form a galvanic (voltaic) cell in dilute sulfuric acid. Zinc is the more active metal, so it loses electrons and is oxidized (Zn - 2e⁻ → Zn²⁺) as the anode; electrons travel through the wire to the copper electrode, where H⁺ gains electrons and is reduced to hydrogen gas, so copper is the cathode and bubbles gas. The directed flow of electrons in the wire is the electric current, and chemical energy becomes electrical energy. If the two metals touch directly, electrons pass straight to the ions and no current flows through an external circuit.

Why does a worn-out dry cell leak a sticky liquid?

In a classic zinc-carbon cell the zinc can is the outer shell and the negative electrode, so it is steadily oxidized and thins during use. Once corrosion pokes a hole in it, the inner paste of ammonium chloride electrolyte and manganese dioxide seeps out as a sticky leak. Dead batteries should be removed promptly, especially from devices kept for months, because the leaked fluid corrodes the contacts and ruins the equipment.

Why is the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) assigned a potential of exactly 0, and what role does it play in electrochemistry?

Because absolute electrode potentials cannot be measured, electrochemistry defines the standard hydrogen electrode (2H⁺ + 2e⁻ ⇌ H2 under standard conditions) to have exactly 0 V as a reference. All other standard electrode potentials are measured relative to the SHE, allowing prediction of the direction and driving force of redox reactions.

What is overpotential, and why does electrolyzing water require a much higher voltage than the theoretical decomposition voltage?

Overpotential is the extra voltage loss when an electrode operates away from its equilibrium potential, driven mainly by sluggish reaction kinetics (activation polarization) and difficulty of bubble detachment. Water's theoretical decomposition voltage is about 1.23 V, but the slow oxygen-evolution reaction typically forces the real cell to 1.8–2.0 V or more before gas evolves appreciably.

How do lithium ions (Li⁺) move inside a lithium-ion battery during charging and discharging, and why is the battery lighter than traditional ones?

During charge and discharge, Li⁺ ions shuttle back and forth by inserting into and extracting from layered/framework electrode materials (intercalation), while electrons do work through the external circuit—a 'rocking-chair' mechanism. Because lithium is the lightest metal with the lowest electrode potential, it stores much energy per unit mass and needs no heavy metal negative electrode, making the battery light and energy-dense.

Why can the lithium-ion battery in a phone be recharged thousands of times without dying?

Its key reaction is the reversible intercalation and de-intercalation of lithium ions: while charging, Li⁺ leaves the cathode, migrates through the electrolyte and slots into the graphite layers of the anode; while discharging, it moves back. Because the ions simply commute while the electrode frameworks stay intact, the reaction can repeat over and over. Each cycle does lose a little capacity, so after thousands of cycles the battery is visibly weaker and needs replacing.

How do you identify the positive and negative electrodes of a battery?

In a galvanic cell, the electrode where oxidation occurs and electrons leave is the negative electrode (anode); the one where reduction occurs and electrons enter is the positive electrode (cathode). In the external circuit, current flows from the positive terminal through the load back to the negative. The higher-voltage, + labeled terminal is generally positive.

What is the essential difference in conduction between electrolytes and non-electrolytes?

Electrolytes conduct via freely moving ions in solution, whereas metals conduct via electrons; the charge carriers differ. A non-electrolyte does not dissociate into ions in water and therefore does not conduct. The distinction is made by whether the solution can carry current under an electric field.

What do positive or negative standard reduction potentials signify?

Standard reduction potentials E° use the standard hydrogen electrode (0 V) as reference; more positive means the species is more easily reduced (strong oxidant), more negative means its reduced form is easily oxidized (strong reductant).

Why does steel corrode faster in seawater?

Seawater contains abundant electrolytes such as sodium chloride, greatly raising conductivity and accelerating the electrochemical corrosion circuit. Salt also breaks the protective film and forms local corrosion cells like differential aeration. Steel therefore corrodes much faster in seawater than in fresh water.

Fuel cells burn hydrogen or methanol too, so why are they far more efficient than ordinary combustion?

Ordinary combustion first turns chemical energy into heat, then a heat engine converts that heat into work, and Carnot efficiency caps how much survives. A fuel cell instead runs the fuel's redox reaction directly at the electrodes, so electrons stream through an external circuit and chemical energy becomes electricity in one step, outside the Carnot limit. That is why a hydrogen fuel cell can exceed 80% theoretical efficiency versus about 30% for an internal combustion engine. A fuel cell is essentially a galvanic cell that keeps being fed fuel and generates power as long as gases are supplied.

Once a workpiece hangs in a plating bath with the current switched on, why does nickel or chromium grow evenly across its surface?

The trick is cathodic reduction and deposition. The DC supply turns the workpiece into the cathode; metal ions in the bath migrate to its surface, capture electrons, and are reduced to neutral atoms that settle into the crystal lattice layer by layer, thickening the coating. Each nickel ion takes up two electrons to become metal, while hexavalent chromium from chromic-acid baths reaches the surface through several reduction steps. Anode practice differs by bath: nickel plating dissolves soluble nickel slabs to replenish ions, while chromium plating runs insoluble lead-based anodes topped up with chromic acid. Current density, temperature and additives control how fast nuclei form and grow, setting the coating density, brightness and adhesion.

Why do buried steel pipes often corrode faster than steel exposed to air?

Steel rusts in air only with a water film, while damp soil is itself an electrolyte that favours electrochemical corrosion. Differences in oxygen content, acidity and salinity across the soil create oxygen-concentration cells and micro-cells on different sections of the pipe: oxygen-rich zones act as cathodes while oxygen-poor zones become anodes and dissolve faster. The wetter and saltier the soil, the better it conducts and the stronger the corrosion current - which is why buried pipelines get protective coatings plus cathodic protection.

Why is a "reference electrode" (such as the saturated calomel electrode) used in electrochemical measurements, and what does it do?

Faraday's first law states that the mass of substance deposited at an electrode is proportional to the charge passed; the second law states that for the same charge, the amount of different substances deposited is proportional to their chemical equivalent (molar mass divided by electrons transferred). This lets industry calculate product amounts precisely from charge, underpinning electrolysis and electroplating.

Why are the labels "anode" and "cathode" assigned oppositely in a galvanic cell versus an electrolytic cell?

The anode is always the electrode where oxidation occurs and the cathode always where reduction occurs; the names depend only on the reaction type, not on charge. In a galvanic cell the anode is the negative terminal, but in an electrolytic cell it is connected to the positive supply, so the anode/cathode-to-positive/negative relationship is reversed between the two setups.

Why do ships bolt blocks of zinc onto their steel hulls to keep them from rusting?

They act as sacrificial anodes. Zinc sits below iron on the electrochemical series, so in seawater the two metals form a galvanic couple in which zinc oxidizes and dissolves first. The electrons it releases flow into the hull and keep the steel electron-rich, preventing iron atoms from leaving as ions; the hull behaves as a protected cathode. Periodically replacing the worn zinc blocks keeps the protection going.
