Why is glass transparent while most metals are not?

Glass has a band gap larger than visible photons, so light passes through; metals have free electrons that absorb and reflect light.

Why cure concrete by keeping it wet for days after pouring?

Compared with ordinary glass, how do nucleating agents such as TiO2 and ZrO2 enable controlled internal crystallization in glass-ceramics, and why do the resulting fine crystals greatly improve strength and thermal-shock resistance?

The nucleating agent first drives amorphous phase separation that produces subcritical nuclei, onto which major phases such as lithium disilicate or beta-spodumene grow heterogeneously during two-stage heat treatment. Grain sizes are kept near 50-500 nm, so dense interlocking crystals deflect crack tips and raise toughness, while the bulk expansion coefficient is tuned by adjusting the crystalline fraction. Lithium-disilicate glass-ceramics consequently reach flexural strengths of several hundred megapascals and survive thermal shocks far beyond what the parent homogeneous glass tolerates.

Is glass actually a liquid? Why is it classified as an amorphous solid rather than a supercooled liquid?

At room temperature glass has a definite shape and elastic modulus, behaving as a solid; it simply cooled so fast that viscosity rose before atoms could arrange into a crystal, yielding a disordered "amorphous" structure. The thicker bottoms of old windowpanes come from manufacturing, not from sluggish flow.

Why does glass need to be annealed?

Rapid cooling leaves internal stress that can later self-crack; slow annealing relaxes it so the finished glass is stable.

Why are old church windows thicker at the bottom, said to be 'flowing'?

Glass is an amorphous solid, not a slow-flowing liquid; thicker bottoms come from old casting/grinding methods, not flow at room temperature.

Why does iron in glass look green sometimes and yellow other times?

In producing ordinary window glass, why are both sodium oxide and calcium oxide added to silica rather than either one alone?

Pure SiO2 melts near 1700 degrees C with extremely high viscosity, which makes forming impractical; Na2O breaks some Si-O-Si bridges into non-bridging oxygens, sharply lowering melting temperature and viscosity. A sodium silicate network alone is open, however, so Na+ leaches out in water and chemical durability suffers. Adding CaO supplies Ca2+ ions that occupy interstices and cross-link non-bridging oxygens, densifying the network and restoring water resistance while keeping easy low-temperature melting - the basic recipe logic of soda-lime glass.

Why does tempered glass break into small granules, not sharp shards?
