How do semiconductors differ from conductors and insulators?
Conductors have overlapping valence and conduction bands with tiny resistance; insulators have a wide band gap that blocks electron promotion; semiconductors sit between (silicon ~1.1 eV) and conduct far better when heated or doped. This tunability makes silicon the basis of integrated circuits.

How do thermoelectric materials directly convert heat and electricity, and what parameter governs their efficiency?
Thermoelectric materials exploit the Seebeck effect (voltage from a temperature difference) and Peltier effect (temperature difference from current) for direct heat–electricity conversion. Efficiency is set by the dimensionless figure of merit ZT = S²σT/κ, where S is the Seebeck coefficient, σ the electrical conductivity, and κ the thermal conductivity. Raising ZT requires enhancing electrical transport while suppressing heat conduction (e.g., via nanostructuring), the central design trade-off.

Why do nanomaterials often show special properties?
When materials shrink to the nanoscale (1–100 nm), the fraction of surface atoms and surface area surge, and quantum confinement appears. This makes nanoparticles differ from bulk in catalytic activity, color, and melting point—gold nanoparticles can look red, for instance. Such traits advance catalysis and medicine.

How does the stoichiometry of ternary lithium-ion cathode materials such as NMC affect performance?
NMC cathodes have the formula LiNiₓMnᵧCo_{1−ₓ−ᵧ}O₂ (x+y+z=1), where nickel boosts capacity, manganese stabilizes the structure and safety, and cobalt improves conductivity and rate capability. Raising nickel content (e.g., NMC811) increases energy density but worsens cation mixing and interfacial side reactions, shortening cycle life. Material design thus trades off capacity, stability, and cost.

Why are alloys often harder than pure metals?
Alloys mix a metal with other elements; foreign atoms disrupt the regular layered arrangement of pure metal, hindering dislocation slip. Size mismatch and solid-solution strengthening raise hardness and strength—steel is far harder than pure iron. This is why engineering rarely uses pure metals.

What are the two main types of adsorption on catalyst surfaces, and why do they matter for catalysis?
Physisorption arises from van der Waals forces and is reversible, non-specific, and low in activation energy; chemisorption involves bond formation with electron sharing or transfer and is selective and more stable. Catalysis generally relies on moderate chemisorption—too strong poisons the surface, too weak fails to activate reactants. Adsorption strength is therefore central to catalyst design.

Why are ceramics hard yet brittle?

Why can shape-memory alloys such as Nitinol 'remember' their original shape after being deformed?
Shape-memory alloys like Nitinol (NiTi) undergo a reversible martensitic phase transformation at low temperature, when they can be easily deformed into a new shape. Upon heating back to the higher-temperature austenite phase, the material spontaneously recovers the 'remembered' shape set at high temperature; the effect arises from the reversibility of the crystal-phase transition.
