What is a coordinate bond?
A coordinate bond is a special covalent bond in which both electrons of the shared pair are donated entirely by one atom (the ligand) while the other supplies an empty orbital. It is common in complexes and the ammonium ion (NH4+). Once formed, it is essentially no different from other covalent bonds.

What is chelation?
Chelation is when a polydentate ligand binds the same central metal ion through two or more donor atoms, forming a ring-like complex called a chelate. Thanks to ring stability (the chelate effect), chelates are usually harder to dissociate than monodentate complexes. EDTA is a common strong chelator used in water treatment and detoxification.

What are hybrid orbitals?
Hybrid orbital theory linearly combines atomic orbitals of similar energy on a central atom into the same number of new orbitals better oriented for bonding, such as sp, sp2 and sp3 hybridization. It explains molecular geometry and bond angles. Hybridization keeps the total electron count and only redistributes spatial orientation.

Why is supercritical CO2 widely used as a green solvent?
Beyond the critical point of CO2 (31.1 degrees Celsius, 7.38 MPa), the fluid becomes supercritical: density near that of a liquid while viscosity and diffusivity approach those of a gas, with solvating power tunable continuously by temperature and pressure and able to dissolve many nonpolar substances. Releasing pressure vaporizes the CO2 with no solvent residue, so it is used for caffeine decaffeination, natural-product extraction and green cleaning.

Why are some four-coordinate complexes tetrahedral while others are square planar?
The d-electron count of the central ion and the ligand field together set the geometry. d8 ions such as Pt2+ and Au3+, and Ni2+ in strong fields, often form square-planar complexes because crystal-field stabilization energy is greatest there; cisplatin is the classic example. Most d0-d5 ions, and high-spin d7-d10 ions in weak fields such as [CoCl4]2- (d7) and Zn2+ (d10), prefer tetrahedral geometry, and bulky ligands also favor tetrahedral to reduce steric repulsion.

Why does a semiconductor's conductivity increase as temperature rises, while a metal's does the opposite?

Why does EDTA coordinate with many metal ions, and how is the chelate effect explained?
EDTA has two amino and four carboxyl groups - six donor atoms - and forms 1:1 hexadentate chelates with metal ions. The chelate effect is largely entropic: binding releases several water molecules that were independently coordinated, increasing the disorder of the system, making the Gibbs free energy change more negative and the complex more stable. This is why EDTA softens water, treats heavy-metal toxicity and serves in quantitative analysis.

At a given temperature and pressure, a solution is saturated when solute dissolves at the same rate as it crystallizes back out; that concentration is the solubility under those conditions. To test it, add a little more solute and see whether it refuses to dissolve, or check whether existing crystals never disappear when shaken - both indicate saturation.

Metals are usually solid at room temperature - why is mercury the only liquid metal under normal conditions?
A metal's melting point reflects the strength of its metallic bonding. In mercury, relativistic effects pull the 6s electrons close to the nucleus, shrinking and stabilizing that orbital so it barely takes part in metallic bonding; the weak bonds between mercury atoms give it a melting point of only -39 °C, so it is a liquid at room temperature. The same relativistic effects tint gold yellow. Mercury looks pretty, but it evaporates slowly even at room temperature and its vapour is toxic, so a broken mercury thermometer must be ventilated and cleaned up promptly.

Why does adding salt slightly raise the boiling point of cooking water?
This is boiling-point elevation, a colligative property. A nonvolatile solute lowers the vapor pressure, so the solution must be heated to a higher temperature before its vapor pressure matches the external pressure. The elevation depends only on the molality, not on what the solute is. In everyday cooking the salt amount is small, so the effect is slight and mostly for flavor.

Why can the same substance form different crystal shapes (polymorphism), and why does this matter for medicines?
Polymorphism is when one composition adopts several crystal forms differing in molecular packing or conformation, each with distinct stability, melting point, and solubility. Different polymorphs of a drug can dissolve at very different rates, directly affecting efficacy and safety, so pharmacopeias strictly control crystal forms of key medicines.

Bond energy is the energy needed to break one mole of a given bond in the gas phase, or released when it forms, usually taken as an average. The larger the bond energy, the stronger the bond and the more stable the molecule. Comparing bond energies helps judge whether a reaction is exothermic or endothermic.

Why does milk look like a white turbid emulsion rather than a clear liquid?
Milk is a colloid, specifically an oil-in-water emulsion: casein coats tiny fat globules dispersed in water, forming particles about 0.1 to 10 micrometers across.
Diamond and graphite are both made of carbon atoms, so why is one hard enough to cut glass while the other is soft enough to write?
It all comes down to how the carbon atoms are linked. In diamond each carbon forms four covalent bonds in a three-dimensional tetrahedral network that is extremely rigid, making it the hardest natural material; in graphite each carbon bonds to three neighbours in flat hexagonal sheets, and the sheets are held together only by weak van der Waals forces, so they slide easily - graphite is soft, and the mobile electrons make it conductive. Different forms of the same element are allotropes; carbon nanotubes and graphene are further members of carbon's family.

Why does a light beam leave a visible path in a colloid but not in a true solution?
This is the Tyndall effect. Colloid particles, 1 to 1000 nanometers across, are close to the wavelength of visible light and scatter it strongly, leaving a visible beam path; true solutions contain molecules or ions far smaller than the wavelength, so scattering is negligible and no path appears. The Tyndall effect is thus a quick test for distinguishing a colloid from a true solution.

Why do fish in ponds easily run short of oxygen in hot weather?
Gas solubility in water falls as temperature rises. Dissolution is exothermic, so warming shifts the equilibrium toward gas escaping; hot water therefore holds much less dissolved oxygen. With microbial activity also consuming oxygen faster, fish are more likely to gasp at the surface. Cold water holds more oxygen, which is why aquariums are cooled and aerated in summer.

Why does ice float on liquid water, and which structural feature is responsible?
In liquid water, thermal motion keeps breaking and reforming hydrogen bonds, so molecules pack more closely. On freezing, each molecule hydrogen-bonds to four neighbors, building an open tetrahedral network that makes ice less dense (~0.92 g/cm3) than liquid water. Ice therefore floats, lakes freeze top-down, and aquatic life survives below.

Allotropes are different forms of the same element as a pure substance, differing in atomic arrangement or bonding and thus in properties. Carbon allotropes include diamond, graphite, fullerenes and graphene. Oxygen and ozone are allotropes of oxygen.

What is the triple point on the phase diagram of water, and is it the same as the freezing point?
The triple point is the unique temperature and pressure at which liquid water, ice and water vapor coexist in equilibrium - 0.01 degrees Celsius and 611.7 pascals. It differs from the familiar freezing point at 1 atmosphere (0 degrees Celsius), which shifts with pressure, while the triple point is a fixed thermodynamic reference. Historically the kelvin scale was defined via the water triple point (273.16 K); since the 2019 SI redefinition the kelvin is fixed through the Boltzmann constant, though the triple point remains an important temperature fixed point.

Why does table salt dissolve in water but not in gasoline?
This is the like-dissolves-like rule. Water is strongly polar and pulls Na+ and Cl- apart from the lattice through ion-dipole interactions; gasoline is a nonpolar hydrocarbon that cannot weaken the ionic lattice, so salt hardly dissolves in it. Polar solvents dissolve ionic or polar solutes, while nonpolar solvents dissolve nonpolar solutes.

What is a crystal?
A crystal is a solid in which atoms, ions or molecules are arranged periodically according to a regular pattern, giving it a definite geometric shape and a fixed melting point. Common examples are table salt, quartz and snowflakes. In contrast, non-crystals like glass lack long-range order.

Why is XeF₄ square planar in shape?
Xenon has 8 valence electrons; after bonding to 4 fluorines it keeps 2 lone pairs. VSEPR predicts 6 electron domains in an octahedron, and the two lone pairs sit opposite each other to minimize repulsion, leaving the 4 fluorines coplanar in a square.

What is a phase transition?
A phase transition is the change of a substance from one phase to another, such as melting, freezing, evaporation, condensation and sublimation. It usually involves absorbing or releasing energy while the temperature stays constant. Ice melting into water is a solid-liquid phase transition at normal pressure.

Why does sugar dissolve faster and more in hot water than in cold water?
Dissolving means sugar molecules breaking away from the crystal and being pulled apart by water, which requires overcoming sugar–sugar interactions. Higher temperature makes water molecules move more vigorously and supply more energy, so sugar dissolves both faster and to a greater amount (higher solubility).
