What is the "inert-pair effect," and why does lead commonly show +2 while carbon and silicon in the same group favor +4?

In heavy p-block elements such as lead, the ns² electron pair is stabilized by relativistic effects and poor shielding, so it tends to remain unshared and the lower oxidation state (+2) becomes favored. Lighter group members like C and Si show negligible relativistic effects, so their ns² electrons bond normally and +4 dominates.

What is the lanthanide contraction?

Lanthanide contraction is the gradual decrease in atomic and ionic radii from lanthanum to lutetium, caused by poor shielding of 4f electrons raising the effective nuclear charge. It makes elements of the 5th and 6th periods in the same subgroup nearly equal in size (e.g. zirconium and hafnium are hard to separate) and affects transition-metal trends. It is a key structural effect in the table.

How many isotopes does carbon have?

Common carbon isotopes include the stable carbon-12 and carbon-13 and the radioactive carbon-14; short-lived isotopes like carbon-10 and carbon-11 can also be made in the lab. Carbon-12 defines the atomic mass standard and carbon-14 is used for dating. They differ in mass but have nearly identical chemistry.

First ionization energy generally rises across a period, so why do boron (B) and oxygen (O) show unexpected drops?

From Be to B the electron enters the higher-energy 2p orbital with more shielding, so it is easier to remove, dropping below Be. From N to O the added electron pairs in a 2p orbital, and increased electron–electron repulsion makes one easier to remove, dropping below N. These "dips" reflect orbital energy and repulsion effects.

Why is fluorine the most electronegative element?

Fluorine has a very small radius and relatively large nuclear charge, so its outer electrons are close to the nucleus and strongly attracted, and it needs only one more electron to complete its octet. This makes its pull on bonding electrons the strongest of all elements, with a Pauling electronegativity of about 4.0, the highest.

What is the trend in oxidizing power of the halogens?

From top to bottom among halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine), the atomic radius grows and the ability to gain electrons weakens, so oxidizing power decreases. Fluorine can displace the compounds of chlorine, bromine and iodine, while iodine can hardly displace any other halogen. The stronger oxidizers are often used as oxidizing agents.

Why were noble gases once called inert gases?

Noble gases have complete outer shells (helium with 2 electrons, the rest with 8), making them extremely reluctant to gain or lose electrons, so they were long thought to be completely unreactive. Only after Bartlett synthesized a xenon compound in 1962 was it confirmed they can participate in reactions. The more accurate name is noble (rare) gases.

Why do alkali metals react violently with water?

Alkali metals (lithium, sodium, potassium and so on) have a single outer electron with large atomic radius and low ionization energy, so they lose it very easily. In water they rapidly transfer electrons to water molecules, producing hydrogen gas and a strong base while releasing much heat. Potassium, rubidium and cesium react even more violently, sometimes igniting or exploding.

What does electronegativity of an element mean?

Electronegativity measures an atom's ability to attract electrons in a chemical bond. A higher value means a stronger pull on shared electrons. On the Pauling scale, fluorine has the highest electronegativity at about 4.0, while the alkali metals have the lowest.

What is the periodic law?

The periodic law states that the properties of elements vary periodically with increasing atomic number. Mendeleev originally arranged them by atomic mass, while the modern table uses atomic number. This law is the basis for predicting the properties of elements and their compounds.

Why do elements in the same group (column) behave similarly—for example, lithium, sodium, and potassium all react vigorously with water?

Elements in the same group share the same number of outermost (valence) electrons, and chemical behavior is governed mainly by those. Alkali metals all have a single outer electron that they readily lose to form +1 ions, so they all show similar reactivity.

How does metallic character vary in the periodic table?

Metallic character (ease of losing electrons) strengthens leftward across a period and downward in a group, so the lower-left elements (e.g., Cs, Fr) are most metallic and the upper-right (e.g., F) most nonmetallic. This is opposite to ionization-energy trends.

How does atomic radius change down a group of the periodic table?

Within the same main group, the number of electron shells increases from top to bottom, so the atomic radius grows. A larger radius places the outer electrons farther from the nucleus and weakens nuclear attraction, so metallic character generally increases and nonmetallic character decreases. For example, among alkali metals from lithium to cesium, reactivity rises.

What are the noble gases?

Noble gases, also called inert gases, include helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon and radon, occupying group 18 on the far right of the periodic table. Their outer electron shells are complete, making them extremely unreactive. They were once thought not to react at all, until a few compounds were later synthesized.

How does metallic character change from left to right across a period?

Across a period from left to right, nuclear charge increases and atomic radius shrinks, so the atom's ability to attract electrons grows. Metallic character therefore weakens and nonmetallic character strengthens. In period 3, for instance, reactivity shifts from the strong metal sodium to the strong nonmetal chlorine.

Who created the periodic table of elements?

The periodic table was proposed by the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869. He arranged the then-known 63 elements by atomic mass and found that their properties varied periodically. He also successfully predicted the properties of several elements not yet discovered.
