What characterizes a zero-order reaction? Give an example.

In zero-order kinetics the rate is independent of reactant concentration (rate = k), so concentration falls linearly and the half-life depends on initial concentration. Examples include enzyme reactions saturated with substrate and surface-catalyzed processes (e.g., NH₃ decomposition on metal) limited by active-site count.

Why are radical reactions often "chain" reactions, and what role does an initiator like a peroxide play?

Radicals carry a single, highly reactive electron; once formed they snatch electrons from neighbors and create new radicals, letting the reaction perpetuate like a chain (chain propagation). An initiator such as benzoyl peroxide thermally or photochemically homolyzes to produce the first radicals, starting the chain—without it, radicals rarely form spontaneously at room temperature.

Why can a solution repeatedly turn red then blue by itself?

The Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction: bromate oxidizes an organic substrate with periodic concentration oscillations, flipping an indicator's color back and forth—a chemical clock.

Why does the blue-bottle solution repeatedly turn blue then colorless?

In the blue-bottle experiment, glucose (a reducing agent) and methylene blue (a redox indicator) are dissolved in water exposed to air. At rest, dissolved oxygen oxidizes the colorless reduced methylene blue to its blue oxidized form; meanwhile glucose slowly reduces the blue form back to colorless. This redox cycle repeats, so the solution periodically turns blue and then fades. The oscillation speed depends on temperature, oxygen, and sugar concentration.

How does comparing Q with K predict reaction direction?

Q has the same form as K but uses instantaneous concentrations/partial pressures. If Q < K, the reaction proceeds forward to make more product; if Q > K, it goes reverse; Q = K means equilibrium. This criterion is more quantitative and general than Le Chatelier.

Why is the Haber–Bosch ammonia process run at about 400–500 °C rather than higher?

Ammonia synthesis is exothermic, so high temperature shifts equilibrium away from NH3; but low temperature is too slow. Operating at 400-500 °C, typically near 450 °C, with an iron catalyst balances rate and yield.

How is the reaction order in a rate law determined?

Reaction order cannot be guessed from the balanced equation; it is found experimentally by varying one reactant's concentration while holding others constant and observing the rate change, giving that species' order; the overall order is their sum.

When are Kc and Kp equal?

Kp = Kc(RT)^(Δn),其中 Δn 是气体生成物与反应物化学计量数之差。仅当 Δn = 0(气体摩尔数不变)时 Kp = Kc;否则两者数值随温度变化。
Kp = Kc(RT)^(Δn), where Δn is the change in moles of gas (products minus reactants). Kp equals Kc only when Δn = 0 (no net change in gas moles); otherwise they differ with temperature.

Why don't wood or paper ignite by themselves at room temperature and need a flame or spark to start?

Combustion is exothermic, but the reaction must first clear an "activation energy" barrier—at room temperature reactant molecules lack the energy to start the oxidation chain. A flame or spark supplies that initial energy to excite a few molecules; the heat they release then sustains the chain reaction.

Why is the ash left after burning wood so much lighter than the original wood?

Burning wood means carbon, hydrogen, and other elements combine with oxygen from the air to form carbon dioxide and water vapor that escape, leaving only incombustible ash (oxides of potassium, calcium, silicon, etc.). No mass is lost—most products simply leave as gas—so the ash is much lighter.
