Bitcoin's longest-chain rule discards losing fork blocks entirely — what incentive distortion follows, and how does the GHOST rule correct it?

Discarded stale blocks waste honest miners' work, while large pools suffer proportionally fewer orphans and gain a relative edge — fertile ground for selfish-mining attacks. GHOST weighs subtrees including stale blocks when selecting the main chain and rewards their miners, cutting orphan rates at high block frequencies, which is how Ethereum stays secure with faster block times.

Bitcoin light clients can confirm incoming payments while downloading nothing but block headers — what role do Merkle proofs play in this?

An 80-byte header carries only the Merkle root, so a payer hands over an authentication path and the node recomputes roughly log n hashes—about 500 bytes—to confirm the transaction is committed in that block. Light nodes therefore skip storing and executing all transactions, instead tracking cumulative difficulty along the longest chain to gauge confirmation depth. This trade-off of trusting majority hash power rather than full validation is exactly the simplified payment verification scheme of Section 8 of the Bitcoin whitepaper.

With less than half of total hash power, what can a blockchain attacker actually do—and what stays out of reach?

Every full node independently validates consensus rules, so no amount of hash power mints valid-looking blocks with forged signatures or inflated supply—such blocks are simply discarded. What majority hashing actually buys is short-term monopoly on ordering: withholding blocks to orphan recent competitors (chain reorganization) and reversing one's own past transactions in a double-spend. The attack steals nobody's keys yet torches market confidence, as when Ethereum Classic suffered 51% attacks in 2019 costing exchanges millions of dollars.
