Why does the memory wall become a worse bottleneck as processors get faster?
For decades CPU arithmetic throughput improved far faster than DRAM latency, so the gap widened until many programs spend most of their time waiting on memory rather than computing. This is the memory wall: however fast the ALUs get, a cache miss costing hundreds of cycles still dominates runtime. Mitigations are deeper cache hierarchies, more memory-level parallelism (many outstanding misses in flight), hardware prefetching and moving computation closer to the data — not simply raising clock frequency.

What is the difference between superscalar and out-of-order execution?
Superscalar means a CPU can issue multiple instructions per clock cycle to several execution units, increasing parallelism. Out-of-order execution lets instructions whose results are not needed by earlier ones run ahead of schedule, keeping idle units busy without violating dependencies. They are often combined: superscalar provides hardware parallelism and out-of-order execution optimizes scheduling.

How does a CPU instruction pipeline improve performance?
Executing an instruction splits into stages like fetch, decode, execute, and write-back. Pipelining overlaps these stages across different instructions—like a factory line—boosting throughput up to the number of stages in theory. Hazards arise though: neighboring instructions may race on data (data hazards) or alter control flow (control hazards), handled by forwarding, out-of-order execution, and branch prediction. Superscalar designs even issue several instructions at once.

What problem does NUMA architecture solve in multiprocessor systems?
In large multi-socket systems, memory sits at different distances from processors, and uniform access becomes slow. NUMA (non-uniform memory access) assigns memory local to each processor node, making local access faster and cross-node access slower. The OS then tries to keep a process and its memory on the same node to cut remote-access cost.

Why have CPU clock speeds stalled around 3–5 GHz since roughly 2005?
Dennard scaling once let supply voltage fall in step with transistor size so power density stayed flat and clock speed rose for free at each process node. Below roughly 90 nm threshold voltages stopped shrinking and leakage current grew, breaking that relationship. Pushing frequency further makes power and heat grow superlinearly — the power wall — so cooling and power delivery became hard limits, and vendors switched to multicore designs, heterogeneous accelerators and domain-specific units, buying performance with parallelism instead of gigahertz.

Why is branch prediction important and how does it work?
Modern CPUs rely heavily on pipelines; when they hit a conditional branch such as an if, waiting for the outcome before fetching the next instruction wastes many cycles, so branch prediction guesses the direction in advance. A correct guess keeps the pipeline flowing, while a misprediction requires flushing and refetching at high cost. Processors often use history statistics such as two-bit saturating counters to improve accuracy.

What is a memory address space, and how do physical and virtual addresses differ?
An address space is the full set of addressable locations. A physical address is the real number on the memory chips, while a virtual address is the logical number a program sees. Through page tables, the OS maps virtual to physical addresses so programs need not know the real memory layout and isolation and protection are easier to enforce.

Testing rays against millions of triangles is slow — how do acceleration structures like BVH speed it up?
A bounding volume hierarchy organizes the scene as a tree: internal nodes store bounding boxes and leaves hold small sets of triangles. A ray is first tested against the box; a miss prunes the whole subtree, and a hit recurses, so ideally each intersection visit costs only O(log n) nodes. Dedicated RT cores on GPUs, surface-area-heuristic (SAH) partitioning, and structures like BVH/KD-tree together enable real-time ray tracing.

DMA(直接内存访问)解决了什么问题?
What problem does DMA (direct memory access) solve?
Without DMA, moving data between a peripheral and memory would force the CPU to copy it byte by byte, hogging its time. A DMA controller can transfer large blocks directly between peripheral and memory without CPU involvement, then signal the CPU with an interrupt when done. This frees the CPU to do other work during the transfer.

How do multi-core processors keep cache data consistent, using MESI as an example?
In multi-core systems each core may cache a copy of the same memory block; the MESI protocol tracks these copies with four states: Modified, Exclusive, Shared, and Invalid. When one core writes data, the protocol invalidates or updates the corresponding copies in other cores so they all observe a consistent value. Such protocols work by broadcasting and snooping on the inter-core bus.

What are cache lines and the principle of locality?
Cache does not move data byte by byte but in blocks called cache lines, typically 64 bytes. The principle of locality says programs tend to reuse recent data (temporal locality) and nearby data (spatial locality). By exploiting locality, one loaded line gets hit many times, markedly improving efficiency.

What are big-endian and little-endian byte orders?
When a multi-byte value such as a 32-bit integer is stored, the byte arrangement varies: big-endian puts the most significant byte at the lowest address, while little-endian puts the least significant byte there. x86 and others commonly use little-endian, whereas network protocols often mandate big-endian. Systems with different byte orders must convert when exchanging raw binary data.

Why do computers use a memory hierarchy?
The memory hierarchy organizes registers, caches, RAM, and disks into a pyramid by speed, capacity, and cost: higher levels are faster, pricier, and smaller, while lower levels are slower, cheaper, and larger. The most frequently used data is kept in upper levels to balance cost and performance. This layering exploits locality, the tendency of programs to repeatedly access nearby data.

What stages does a CPU typically go through to execute one instruction?
The classic flow is fetch, decode, and execute, sometimes extended with memory access and write-back. Fetch reads the instruction from memory, decode figures out what it does and where its operands are, execute lets the ALU or memory perform the operation, and the result is written back to a register or memory. Pipelining overlaps these stages.

What is the purpose of CPU cache and why is it needed?
CPU cache is a small, fast memory between the CPU and main memory that holds recently or soon-to-be-used data, bridging the large speed gap between a fast CPU and slower RAM. When the needed data is already in cache it is a hit; otherwise the CPU must fetch it from much slower main memory. Multi-level caches (L1/L2/L3) trade speed against capacity at each tier.

Why do servers almost always use ECC memory while most desktops skip it?
ECC modules store 8 extra check bits per 64 data bits using a SEC-DED Hamming-style code, so a single flipped bit is corrected transparently and double-bit errors are at least detected. Bit flips from cosmic rays or electrical noise are rare per gigabyte-hour, but servers run huge memories continuously, so the aggregate rate matters and one silent corruption can poison a database or a week-long computation. Desktops are cost-sensitive, tolerate the occasional crash and usually just reboot, so ECC is often omitted.

How does the Harvard architecture differ from the von Neumann architecture?

The Harvard architecture separates instruction memory from data memory and uses two independent buses, allowing instructions to be fetched while data is read or written, which improves throughput. The von Neumann architecture lets instructions and data share one memory and bus, making it simpler. Many modern processors use a modified Harvard design that keeps instructions and data in separate cache levels.

Why do computers store negative numbers in two's complement instead of just adding a sign bit?
Two's complement encodes -x as 2^n - x, so a single adder handles both addition and subtraction: subtracting means adding the complement, and no separate sign-handling datapath is needed. Sign-magnitude and one's complement each give two encodings of zero, complicating comparisons and zero tests, whereas two's complement has a unique zero and spans -2^(n-1) through 2^(n-1)-1. The trade-off is one extra negative value, so negating the most negative number overflows.

No. Concurrency means multiple tasks make progress over a period by interleaving, emphasizing how a program is structured, and it works even on a single core. Parallelism means tasks literally execute at the same time, requiring multiple cores or machines. Concurrency is about dealing with many things in design, parallelism about doing many things at once in execution.

What is the difference between RISC and CISC instruction set styles?
CISC (complex instruction set) offers many powerful, complex instructions that each do a lot, as in x86. RISC (reduced instruction set) keeps only simple, uniform-length instructions and relies on the compiler to combine them, as in ARM and RISC-V, which eases deep pipelining and efficiency. Modern designs blur the line and borrow from both.

Rasterization projects 3D geometry onto the screen, drawing only directly visible surfaces, so shadows and reflections need extra tricks like shadow mapping. Ray tracing shoots rays from the camera through each pixel and traces their bounces and intersections in the scene, naturally producing soft shadows, specular reflections and global illumination — realistic but expensive; long used in film, it entered real-time rendering thanks to GPU hardware acceleration.

How does wear leveling work in SSDs?
Each flash block has a limited number of erase cycles, and rewriting the same area would wear it out early. Wear leveling has the controller track each block's erase count and spread writes evenly across the drive to avoid premature failure of any block. Together with garbage collection, it markedly extends SSD life.

What is an instruction set architecture (ISA)?
An instruction set architecture is the contract between software and hardware: it specifies which instructions a processor can recognize and execute, how registers are organized, and how memory is accessed. Common ISAs include x86, ARM, and RISC-V. A single ISA can be implemented by different vendors using different microarchitectures.

What is the main difference between 32-bit and 64-bit systems?
The bit count refers to the width of the CPU's general registers and address bus. A 32-bit system can theoretically address about 4 GB of memory, while 64-bit supports vastly larger address spaces and processes wider data at once. Modern OSes and software have largely moved to 64-bit to break the memory ceiling.

How are floating-point numbers represented in computers (IEEE 754)?
The IEEE 754 standard splits a float into a sign bit, an exponent, and a mantissa, like scientific notation. In 32-bit single precision, that is 1 sign bit, 8 exponent bits, and 23 mantissa bits, with a biased exponent covering a wide range. It represents decimals but has limited precision and rounding error, so equality comparisons should avoid the equals operator.

What is the difference between SRAM and DRAM?
SRAM stores a bit using several transistors that latch it, making it fast and low-power but large and costly, so it is used for CPU caches. DRAM stores a bit as charge in a capacitor, giving high density and low cost but requiring periodic refresh and being relatively slower, so it serves as main memory. In short, SRAM is fast and expensive, while DRAM is slower, cheaper, and high-capacity.

Why is a GPU better than a CPU at massive parallel computing? How do their design philosophies differ?
CPUs devote a large share of die area to caches and branch prediction, excelling at a few complex tasks; GPUs concentrate transistors into hundreds of simple computing cores, hiding memory latency with massive thread parallelism. GPUs follow the SIMT model — one instruction runs across a group of threads, scheduled as warps — trading per-thread speed for high throughput, far exceeding CPU throughput at similar cost.

A multi-core processor integrates several computing cores on one chip, enabling genuine simultaneous handling of multiple tasks or splitting one task into parallel parts. This makes the machine smoother when running many programs or parallel software and eases raising total compute within a power budget. Only programs rewritten for parallelism fully benefit, however.

How does a mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) store data?
An HDD records data on fast-spinning platters coated with magnetic material, and a moving head reads or writes bits on the surface. Because it involves mechanical seeking and rotational waiting, random access is slow. Its strengths are large capacity, low cost per byte, and persistence without power.

When the data the CPU requests is already in cache and can be fetched quickly, that is a cache hit. If it is not and the CPU must go to slower main memory or even disk, that is a miss with noticeable latency. The higher the hit rate, the closer overall speed approaches the cache's speed.

An interrupt is a signal from a peripheral or program asking the CPU to pause its current work and handle a more urgent event, such as a keypress or incoming network data. The CPU saves its context, runs the matching interrupt handler, then resumes. This spares the CPU from constantly polling devices and improves efficiency.

What does a CPU's clock frequency (GHz) represent?
Clock frequency is how many times per second the CPU's internal clock oscillates, measured in hertz, with GHz meaning billions of cycles per second. Each cycle advances the pipeline a step, so higher frequency usually means faster single-core throughput. It is not the only performance factor; core count and architecture efficiency matter too.
