What key refinements does the BM25 scoring formula introduce over classic TF-IDF, and which problems do term-frequency saturation and document-length normalization each solve?

BM25 swaps the linearly growing TF for a saturating form: the frequency component is (k1+1)·tf / (k1·(1−b+b·|D|/avgdl)+tf), rising monotonically toward a ceiling as frequency grows, so a long document cannot inflate its score endlessly by repeating one word. The length-normalization parameter b weighs each document's length against the collection average, gently demoting overly long documents and removing systematic bias between short and long ones. Both refinements come out of the Robertson-Sparck Jones probabilistic retrieval framework, make BM25 sturdier than TF-IDF, and led Apache Lucene to adopt BM25 as its default ranking algorithm.

Why do search engines combine term-matching weights like TF-IDF with link-analysis signals like PageRank when ranking web pages, and what does each of them measure?

TF-IDF measures how well query terms match a document’s content, answering what the document is about; PageRank estimates a page’s global authority from the link graph, answering who endorses it. They complement each other: content-only ranking rewards keyword stuffing, while link-only ranking surfaces off-topic authority pages. Modern engines feed both into learning-to-rank models that learn the fusion weights automatically.
