Test-driven development claims to improve software quality — does empirical research support this, and where are the limits of the evidence?
Paired case studies at Microsoft and IBM found defect densities dropping by roughly 40%-90% under TDD, at the cost of a 15%-35% slowdown in initial iteration speed. The evidence has clear boundaries: gains depend on testable design and strict red-green-refactor discipline, while legacy codebases and exploratory prototypes often show negligible or even negative effects — TDD is not an unconditional quality guarantee.

In a continuous integration pipeline, why must every commit keep the main branch buildable and passing automated tests? Compared with developing features on long-lived branches and merging late, what is the core advantage?
Continuous integration builds and runs automated tests right after every commit, so integration problems surface within minutes instead of exploding at a late merge stage. Small frequent merges break one huge conflict resolution into many tiny corrections and shrink defect localization down to a single commit. The longer a branch diverges from main, the more merge cost and regression risk grow superlinearly — the classic integration-hell problem.
