The polar vortex is a persistent cyclonic circulation around the pole in the winter stratosphere and troposphere, sustained by polar night and temperature gradients. When it weakens or splits, cold air spills southward and produces anomalous mid-latitude cold snaps. Waugh and Polyakov described the link between sudden stratospheric warming and surface cold events.

A jet stream is a narrow, fast upper-level wind band driven by the temperature contrast between polar and tropical air, meandering along the boundary of warm and cold masses. Its wavy path governs the north-south excursions of air masses and steers cyclones and fronts. NOAA notes that shifts in the jet's position markedly change regional drought and precipitation patterns.

Air near the equator is heated and rises, then flows poleward aloft and sinks around the subtropics, closing a meridional circulation. The sinking branch produces subtropical high pressure and desert belts, while the rising branch feeds the rainy intertropical convergence zone. Holton's An Introduction to Dynamic Meteorology gives a quantitative account of this cell.
